Former Valve Engineer interview

What makes you say that? She seems to be communicating well enough in the video and in fact far better than various coders/engineers I've worked with in the past.

I know far far worse also, but she was in charge of a hardware team at a company where everything seems to be about who you know and how friendly you are. She said the excuse for firing her was 'being abrasive', and she complained a lot about not knowing who to talk to in the company or how to get people to understand that she needed to hire more people. So that leaves me thinking she wasn't a good enough communicator for her position at that company.

Or perhaps people just didn't listen?

She said they weren't very good at hiring, so no matter how much she communicates, it may not matter.

Possibly true but I think her points about her team being a new one and coming into an established company are true and it's pretty hard to change the world. If their project had been one that was in the limelight then maybe they would have had a lot more support.

I would guess that she didn't start off as that 'abrasive' but the continued frustration of the situation meant that by the end she probably was every bit as abrasive as she was accused off. I know I've certainly gone that way in seemingly hopeless job situations in the past.

Really interesting augmented reality discussed here after the Valve thing. Sends the imagination wild! :)

Shame about that. Hope she does well with her new venture.
