Help!

We help to run a guild for online gaming, but now we are struggling with the forum of all things.

We have moved the forum from place to place trying to get a good fast site, like this one to be honest, but at the mo it takes 5-10 mins to even log onto the bloody site... the hosts say its not there fault its ours aas we use SQL for the forum, eh! i thought everyone used a backend SQL server to power the forum?

Im no expert at all with forums and the like, but what or were would people recomend getting a good host and a good forum software, paid of course, to run a decent size guild with say a forum of 20-30 sections and about 200 users?

Any ideas... will try and get the details of what we use when i can log onto the bloody site again, cant get on for past 2 days...

Think its a PHP portal program.
Thanks for reading and hope someone out there can help me.

If you have 200 simultaneous users then that can mean you might need a server with some beef.

I'm no expert ... but if it's 200 users that login throughout the day then a decent shared hosting would do ya no probs.

Need someone like beansprout or the register1 gurus or tso gurus to give you a good idea.

200 concurrent active users would probably be an issue, but 200 registered users with perhaps a handful on at a time would be no problem.

For reference, we used to host a popular IPB football forum on shared hosting, and it'd see 75 - 120 concurrent users with no problems, but after matches would peak to 250+ and we moved them over to a dedi.

We have about 200-200 members and most hours we would have 40-60 logged on and at busy times, weekends, lunch, just after work, maybe 100-150 for a short while. Just seems ages to load anything up when you click on a link, sometimes it takes so long it times out... not good when your trying to get people to use it lol..

Beansprout, when you say we use to host, do you mean you, or is there a company you would recomend going to?

Cheers for the info guys, im ok with desktops and servers, IE and forums is a new ball game for me. So please forgive any silly questions.

I use SMF and host it on one.com, I have between 50-300 members and guests on there at the same time during the day and its copes fine.
