As you may know, the gmail app in android is a true push service. If you wish to forward hotmail emails to gmail to make use of this, you may have come across the block hotmail have put in forwarding to gmail addresses. To get around this I came across this post.

Remember to turn off mobile alerts completely to prevent charges. You do get a couple of setup texts, which you may or may not get charged for (don't know yet), but I figure 20p for this facility is fine.
This tutorial has removed the block for me and emails are getting forwarded (close to instantly) and then pushed to my x10. This also potentially saves more battery as you don't need the android email app constantly polling the pop3/imap server.
edit:
I also advise applying filters on your gmail account to separate the emails with labels/folders.

I've been receiving a bunch of PM's for this so I'm making this thread. This tutorial is for those who wish to forward their hotmail but can't do so because of the restrictions that hotmail has. This might work for you. This might not work for you. Use at your own discretion.
-Login to your Hotmail account
-Go to options
-Go to "Mobile Alerts for new messages" under the "Customize your mail" heading
-Type in your mobile phone number
-You'll then receive a text message with a pin number
-Type in the pin number
-Then select the option telling Hotmail Not to send you any text messages
-Go back to options and click on "Forward mail to another e-mail account"
-You'll now see that the restrictions for forwarding are now gone
-You can forward to any account you please.
