Found a injured pigeon?

I had a similar experience a few years back. Put the bird in a shoebox, called the RSPCA who weren't too bothered.

It took them around five hours to come around and they took the bird away to be euthanized.

Should have just given the thing to my cat.

And BTW, that second bird is just waiting for the injured one to die so it can eat it.
What were you expecting? Animal ambulance and full restorative care?

Commendable that you want to save it my honestly it's only a pigeon, ring it's neck or hit it on top of the skull with a hard object (They are soft) and leave it in a hedge for the foxes. Would you save an injured rat in the same way?

I understand it’s only a pigeon but I think it was a case of out of sight out of mind. And it was literally 6 feet from my door step so couldn’t really ignore it.

And honestly it was the pigeons “wife” who was circling it and nudging it with its head in a effort to get it up that kind of broke me to help

yes I’m a big softie

Nah I think it’s commendable. Fair play.

You can take injured birds to your local vet but IIRC they often just put them down - the best thing to do is perhaps try your local FB group, there was someone who rescues birds near me and responded right away when I found an injured pigeon. I thought it was in quite a bad shape when I scooped it up to put in a shoe box but she turned up and was like, nah we can look after it, it should recover etc..

You could give it some water overnight etc..

edit - ah too late to the thread, glad to see it's at a rescue place, nice one! :)

The injured one was the 'wife' i believe...the other looks like a male....

On a side not when I was out dropping it off someone from the rspca also dropped by with a cage to pick it up.

they had my details so should really have called prior, anyhow seems it’s worked out for the best for the pigeon considering what folk are saying about the rspca.

Pigeons are herbivores, with a gizzard, not a stomach like a carnivore or omnivore, so whilst they will half heartedly pick at meat their digestive system is not naturally designed to consume it. A gizzard is a muscular form of stomach developed to grind seeds and suchlike using ingested grit. A carnivore's stomach is different and relies on acids, quite strong ones, to break down fat and tissue to digestible forms. If my biology lessons memory is somewhat sound. :) Pigeons are definitely not natural cannibals.

I know you're most likely joking about this but just incase not, please don't ever do this and take any birds off a cat that has one. I've had to dispatch a few birds that cats have gotten hold of, maimed and then just left to suffer. Cats are evil with their prey.

I was going to make some suggestions about what to do with the slum chicken, but I see you have already found some ladies to prolong it’s suffering.
