Found a well…

Lovely brickwork, that's been done with care. Make sure you get a water test on it before drinking any. Could be all kinds of cack growing in there.

Looks awesome and definitely something a feature could be made of if it turns out not to be practical to use.

we also found loads of little bits of clay pipes (as in for smokers) - enough we have worked out the factory they were made at, and what we think is a merchants weight :)

I have a well. The environment agency come round once a month or so to measure the depth to the water table. They told me in the event of a hosepipe ban Im legally able to pump my own water from it to do what I want. I’ve never done so but did buy some water purifying tablets after I saw some of the horror stories that never came to pass about how utilities might be affected when Brexit kicked in. I feel suitably prepared between my well and chainsaw for the zombie apocalypse now!

Haha, we had a eucalyptus that needed to come down before it fell, I was on my way out to get a chainsaw, when my other half said her workmate was coming round to cut it up for us…. Need to grow another tree now before I have a good excuse…

as said , just be careful incase the rubble is ledged you dont want to find it suddenly collapsing and you falling. father in law had a well in the corner of the farmhouse garden, the family owned the farm for generations, have fond memories of running stainless piping down to a old clack type pump at the bottom over 200 feet and then having to cast a reinforced concrete lid to cap it off to fit the top of the pump to.... loads of fun but flippin hard work.

Would definitely be careful clearing it - was watching a YT video recently where someone found a well it was like 96 feet deep or something.
my old house had a well in it that was 100ft deep easily with the line i dropped down there over 12ft diameter loverly brickwork too.

I can see why somebody might have chosen to tip rubble down a disused well, an easy way to get rid of the rubble and make the well safe at the same time.

How far will you go in clearing it? I think beyond 10m it would get sketchy as you'd need a reliable way of getting back out, might be a case of fixing ladders to the brick work.

It’s quite old brickwork, not sure anything much can be fixed to it…

There is a well specialist company down the road, I think we’ll stop when we start getting a bit uncomfortable and if we want to go deeper speak to the professionals :)

mostly going to be used for watering the garden - not sure how deep will need
