the other day i was having a look round for something i could make a filter for my new cooling rig and come across something i would like to share with the other modders on this forum

the only thing is can i post a link to the shop on (E)? it only sells different types of mesh and dosen't sell any hardware or anything like that so is no compertition to OCUK

also when the build is complete i will post pic's and hopefully some sort of build log for those interested

yes i am talking dust filters, and infact i've already started using it and works well, still early days to say how well it stops dust build up but airflow is slightly improved from the foam stuff i was using before

i will post some pics a little later i have mates round right now

ok here's the pic from the eb store i got it from

quote from page
"Ultra Fine Stainless Steel Woven Wire Mesh Fat Quarter - You Won't Believe That It Is Metal

This piece of woven wire cloth is super fine, with an closed weave. There are 200 holes per linear inch!!

This is an ideal material for textiles and dress making. As such we have listed it here as available by the fat quarter, this is usually a patchwork and quilting unit of measure."

but i saw a different use :D and i have loads of things i want to try, first one is replaceing the window on my antec 900 with this mesh and make filters for the front intakes and then in a couple of weeks when i get my HAF 932 make more filters for that :D

no i think that's there for scale, here's another couple of pic's but really need a microscope to see the holes in this yet temps are lower than normal room temp 30'c cpu temp 36 before room temp would be about the same but idle temp would be around 42'c

anyway here's the pic's

this stuff is so fine yet it's made from steel :D

to give you some idea, the strands are like fine cotton yet made from Stainless Steel

ok i've been having a play with it and have made my first Prototype :D
this is the filter i made for where my pc is but is all soon to be changed so didn't see the point in showing yet, but there are 3 fans behind where the filter is blowing cool air over the front and side of the case
SS100457.jpg

this is how much dust and dog hair it picked up in about 2 hours :o
SS100454.jpg

this is what i was using before but let way to much dust through
SS100455.jpg

here's another view of the old stuff
SS100460.jpg

i've also retro fitted (with tape so no pics yet :) ) my kids computer case with filters all round, mainly due to me having to rebuild it today and OMG it was caked :(

will update when there's progress, i'm off to make a cloak for my graphics card lol

How restrictive is this stuff then?
not very really, i've been doing a little testing and cpu temps are only 1'c difference between no filter to filter fitted

when i've finished building the real thing should be able to remove even that small amount and i'll know more once i rebuild my pc in my HAF 932 when i get it about dust build up ect

i'm still waiting to see if i can say or not, don't want to brake the rulez :) but i think i can give you a little hint, it's a well known auction site and the "shop" i bought it from only sells mesh and other metal things

(if someone like a mod can tell me if it's ok to post a link to this "shop" it would be great, also if what i've said already is not ok let me know and ill edit/remove it)

yeah no probs, you might want to subscribe or something, most of the progress will be when i get my new case and that won't be till next week poss week after.

but hope to get some of the other stuff out of the way before then and still have to make some way to fit the filters to my kids pc and find a way to add the second pc and drives to box thing my main rig is, and before you ask all will be revealed soon :D

I've just googled 'Ultra Fine Stainless Steel Woven Wire Mesh Fat Quarter'

...you'll soon find out where you can get it from :)
cool i did try to leave as many bread crumbs as i could and hopefully within the rules, glad you found it, i ordered 2 lots and my god there's loads of it, but i do have quite a few things it could be useful for so it's all good :D

right little update i had a spair 5 mins this morning so done a VERY basic pic showing the front of what i plan to do, anyway here it is :D
plan.jpg

and before you ask, NO i didn't get insperation from a lego console brick or anything like that it's just i'm totaly useless at drawing

as you can see from the well drawn plans (LOL) there's a dvd-rw laptop drive, power and reset buttons for my file server a temp display for cool air intake (or possably case temp if i can find one with a very long temp probe) aux power and light switch's and maybe if i have the room power, reset and power light for gaming rig

been having a play again, i found an old 120mm filter in my bits box so thought about using the frame and fixing the mesh to it

anyway here go's

here's the bare frame after cutting out the grill
SS100462.jpg

after cutting a piece of mesh out checking for size and showing what i'm using to fix the mesh to the frame, my good old soldering iron set to 420'c :D possable at lower temps but didn't have much time
SS100465.jpg

here's how i did it, just press lightly on the steel mesh into the plastic and the melted plastic come's through the mesh and when cool is quite strong, as you get a corner done start to pull tight
SS100466.jpg

here's the underside when done, not pretty but it's the back and nobody's going to see that when fitted :D
SS100467.jpg

close up
SS100468.jpg

after a quick trim :D the finished item
SS100470.jpg

so there you go, it took about 15mins and as i said just wanted to see if it would work as i plan to fix this mesh to the inside front plastic of my HAF 932 when i get it hopefully next week

thanks steve, sure will update when i get my new case, hopefully will be as easy as this was but i know it's going to take forever but should look good when done, the only thing that might be a little tricy is the drive bay covers but you know what they say, where there's a will theres a way :D

for all those interested here's a link to the new thread clicky i get my new case today so if it turns up early enough i will get started with the mods and rebuild later today

I'm thinking about using some of this on the side panel of my tj07 where I have 4 fans for my rad. How would I attach it to the mesh?

RoEy

i'm thinking about hot glue to fix it to my side panel, i'm going to try it later on my old antec 900 case to see how it looks and if it will work ok, check my other thread here LINK

as for your case it should work ok, but would recommend getting the medium mesh, the ultra fine is to restrictive
