Four years in Adelaide

Glad that it's still going well for you - I remember when you first moved! Looks like life is treating you well over there, long may it continue. :)

I've always fancied moving away - what profession/discipline are you in?

Things that concern me:
- Cost of immigration
- It is a huge step to take (and i'd be doing it solo - although some top totty in Australia!)
- The medical tests for residency (I absolutely hate needles; can stand anything else... but needles).

I believe my profession is a huge missing entity in Australia, hence I don't think i'd have issues securing a job and the required residency points. (Degree, Masters Degree, Digital Forensics/Cyber Crime vocation).

But yea... cost and pathetic needle fears!

I was an account manager in the UK, but I'm currently studying at uni full time to retrain as a university lecturer.

The cost isn't as bad as you might think. We paid £2,165 for half a shipping container (Allied Pickfords) and £300 for insurance (Letton Percival). Flights were ~£1,600 for myself, my wife, and our baby daughter.

It is a huge step, and not one to be taken lightly. Easier for me since I'm Australian, but a real challenge for my wife.

The medical is little more than a formality, nothing to worry about. I don't think my wife had any needles.

The medical was a simple thing at a private clinic just outside london iirc, they did take a blood sample - though I was sensible enough to let her know I didn't like needles so she made me lie die and look away :)

You would need to get your skills assessed by the ACS and then go through the visa process, it can be expensive but hey, everything is these days! Oh and don't forget your flipping English IELTS tests!

EDIT: Home and Garden ????

Great thread and enjoyed reading. I've heard good things of Australia recently as my workmate and his gf with 2 kids moved out to Perth earlier this year and really seem to be enjoying themselves and have settled very well.

What's the economy like over there?

5 years ago I could have upped sticks and been paid for to move over there as I'm a Chartered Surveyor but now talking to recruitment firms I'd have to get myself over there including the Green Card and accomodation.

What's the economy like over there?

Still better than most of the Western world.

Australia
* Unemployment: 5.6%
* Inflation: 2.2%
* Government debt: 27.1% of GDP
* Bond credit rating: AAA (stable)

UK
* Unemployment: 7.7%
* Inflation: 2.7%
* Government debt: 90% of GDP
* Bond credit rating: AA+ (negative)

Cheers, a lot of the economy is confidence and media coverage, what's the view at the moment positive or negative?

There was a lot of negative spin just before the federal election, which is typical. Now it's all over and the election is just a bad memory from September, the media has decided that the state of our economy isn't as bad as they wanted us to believe.

In short: public confidence is good, and media coverage is starting to reflect this.
