Shot these tonight at 9pm. Both hand-held.

EOS 5D, EF 300 F2.8L IS, 1/320, F2.8, ISO1600.

The lens is heavy but I like it already :)

Wow, I'm liking the sharpness, the 300 f2.8L seems to be an impressive lens.

The depth of field has worked well in these, it really makes the fox's face stand out and adds greatly to the impact of the image.

#1 is my favourite, good composition and beautiful colour and detail in the fox's head.

The composition of #2 isn't as good as the first, maybe try a tighter crop of this one?

Great shots :) Do you have a pet fox in the back garden or something? :p

I disagree, I think having a little more of the fox's body in focus would have improved these shots. The head does indeed stand out, but it looks like it's floating on top of a reddish blur - I think with more of the fox in focus, but still with the background out of focus, the images would just look better, especiallly the second one. They're pretty fantastic as they are (everyone loves foxes, after all) but all the blur is a little offputting.

I expect everyone else to disagree with me, but life would be boring if they didn't. :p

Yeah those shots are pin sharp spie! that 300mm 2.8 lens is one if not the fastest focussing sharpest lenses canon produce. One thing i would like to ask is how you manage to get shots of foxes so easily lol, round my way they are incredibly shy and run off if you get within a mile of them!

i'm surprised by the complete lack of noise @ ISO1600, nice sharp shots and lots of detail, focus is also sopt on, good job :)

Wow, very impressive lack of noise and very impressive sharpness!

Wish I could have kit like that :(

I have to agree with tTz tho, DoF is too small, if it was a stop or two higher would have made the shot much better as the nose is ever so slight OOF and ruining the shot for me :(

Well not ruining them, but would improve them a lot :)

I never ceased to be amazed by the lack of noise at high speed on the 5D. Can't remember the last time I used flash.

The eyes on #1 are brilliant. Borders add a lot too, make this more of a finished product :)
Did you do much processing to this?
I like the DOF, emphasis on the eyes works well.
#1 is my fave.

Thanks :)

All I did was auto levels in Elements 5 - that's it.

Great shots, nice and sharp, and as has already been said, impressive lack of noise. :)

I very rarely put my 5d and 300f2.8IS together good to see that the combo works well though.

Brilliant shots!

The DoF is spot on and they're both nice and sharp. Composition is good in both IMO, but of the two, I prefer the first.

Keep it up :)

Very nice. I rather like the shallow DOF. There's such a nice quality to the 5D image isn't there? I'd be tempted to crop some of the RHS off the first shot.

Unbelievable lack of noise at ISO (ASA) 1600, I wouldn't have thought it possible on a digital camera!

I agree with tTz, I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the fox's body in focus.

But, still nice shots though!

How far away were you from the fox by the way?

I was around 20 ft away or thereabouts.

I like the DoF in shot 1 but agree that shot 2 could have been taken 2 stops less.

Nobody's picked up on the shutter speed of the 1st shot yet - 1/125, 420mm, hand-held. Even with IS that's impressive sharpness. I think the weight of the lens really helps here.

Its incredible isn't it? I've been shooting at 1/50th at 460mm (1.6x on 70-300mm) and its sharp as it would have been at 1/200th :D

Great help on stationary things, still gotta have >1/200th for moving objects tho :(

Oh well :D
