FPS issues with RTX3080

Hi All,

I have the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Vision OC 10GB GDDR6X installed in my system however I am encountering some issues with it. In high intensity games such as Warzone and Microsoft Flight Simulator, the card operated absolutely fine for the first 10-15 minutes of gameplay. Soon after, my frames take a serious hit and the games become unplayable. I have ensured I am up to date with drivers etc. I am also convinced that this is potentially a card issue due to it happening across more than one game.

My full specs are:

Mmmmm ... odd one. What are your 3080 temps?

Quite high temperature for GPU, but the main issue would be the memory junction, which is usually 20C+ over the GPU temperature.
I wouldn't discard the GPU overheating the NVME and thermal throttling it.
Even when watercooled (front only) my previous 3090, the back plate would still get very hot. The whole area next to it, following.
The 3080 won't get as hot on the back, but still hot.
The best way to help the 3080/90 without going down watercooling, is supply of cool air.
I strongly recommend a case with good bottom intake. Or brute force with good fans to ensure air flow is continuous and plentiful.

Fired up HWInfo and according to that while playing MSFS, my peak Memory Junction Temp is 110*C :| I'm guessing it's probably down to a poor choice of case/airflow but I don't know a great deal about computers so thought someone would've took that into consideration when I asked for build advice lol.

gddr6x has a max temp of 95 degrees - that's why a lot of people are complaining their cards (especially EVGA) are burning out

First things first. Which case are you using?
As I said before, the 3080/90 really need airflow, otherwise you end up with a stove.

It’s down to the crappy thermal pads. Perform the thermal pad mod and you will see the VRAM temp. drop and provide you with no more thermal throttling.

I have yet to see my FE thermal throttle but the peak VRAM temp. used to hit 104C before the thermal pad mod. After the mod, my peak VRAM temp. is at 88C.

If the GPU is hitting 88C then what about GPU hot spot?
I would run it with the case side panel off and the case in a well ventilated spot to see if temps are normal so you can rule out a problem with mounting on the GPU itself.

I expect to see an approx. 10/11C increase on the hotpot from the GPU temp.

This is the case for my FE.

I'd put my money on the memory. Either mod the card or RMA it. I modded my 3080 and mem temps dropped from 96c gaming to about 74c. While mining the memory dropped from 108c to 82c and that's during this heatwave.

I imagine its throttling when it's hitting 105+ memory temps. Microsoft flight sim is quite demanding.

Personally I would try a simple undervolt (try 1850 @ 850v). Then a basic fan curve. You should drop anywhere better 6-15 degrees this way. This should be enough to keep memory temps <100.

If after doing the above it's still causing issue - RMA.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I'll get a photo of it in the case when I'm home. The triple fans point down to the floor of my case and there's about half an inch of clearance between the card and the bit metal unit holding in the PSU. I'm not sure if that is actually removable because if it is then it would make a massive difference to airflow.

To start, you got it installed in the wrong PCIE slot. The GPU should be installed in the upper PCIE slot for max speeds.
