FPS issues with RTX3080

my psu is upside down so air drawn in from mesh below, vents out back.

I feel like a total plonker now ha! Card moved to top slot and running much better. Max memory temp for it now peaked at 92*C albeit with the side of case off. Will do some more testing with it. The PSU is fine, the fan on that is at the bottom where there is mesh on the case, so that's not being suffocated.

Look up how to do the thermal pad mod for your particular version of the 3080. All the 3080 3090 have this issue with inadequate VRAM cooling where than fans just aren't capable of changing the temps of VRAM much at all.

I did my rtx 3090 FE 3 weeks ago very easy job to do dropped VRAM temps a whopping 40c which actually allowed me to add a significant overclock afterwards way beyond what I had before and still after the overclock I was 25c under what it was stock settings

If your card dropped 40c there was something clearly wrong with it. Thermal pad mod reduces temps if done right but nowhere near 40c, maybe 5c+/- if it wasn't that bad and 10c +/- on a card badly done at factory.

A card that has dropped 40c should have been sent back for a RMA or replaced, meaning the pads were not even touching the areas needed to cool.

We did 4 of the 3090 FE's at our work to try stop the whine and cool the VRAM and the results were in the 3c to 5c better and was done right before you ask that, 4 cards all done right and within margin of error when tested. So I think you just had a very bad card from the start.
