Any suggestions for an FPS Limiter?

I've just started playing Dead Space and with VSync on, the controls are aweful. With Vsync off, the controls are great but the lighting effects are tearing bad and I've ran into the invisible wall problem early on.

I've tried Afterburner but I cant get my head round it and remember reading something about a DX9 frame limiter.

Get the latest version

Go to Settings in msi afterburner , Monitoring, Pick an option in graph to monitor ( frame rate is a good test ), and show in on screen display. The on screen display icon should load up it's coloured purple, click on the on screen display icon and click the PLUS sign.

Select the exe of the game you're playing to make a new profile. Then select below..

You may need to enable compatibility with modified direct3d runtimes for certain games such as Skyrim with FXAA, that's it! :D

Found out the same as OP playing Dead space with Vsync it locked the FPS to 30 which isn't playable in my opinion, at first I thought my PC might not be able to run this game did some research realised my pc was able to get 120 FPS + so I turned Vsync OFF and my FPS quadrupled.

Thanks for the help :). I've tried AB and D3D overider now but still having the same problem. Ill try and describe it a bit better. As snodge says, the framerate is too low with Vsync on, it's judders really bad. Using AB and D3D with vsync off is very smooth but according to AB, my framerate goes up to 500+ fps and some of the lighting scenes flicker badly. Also, a comical bug is introduced where bodies start jumping around which sort of kills the mood. Any ideas what else I could try?

Have you modded your Dead Space since you started playing. Just that when you mentioned jumping bodies, I had a similar problem a while back with jumping weapons (rpg launchers) in Arma 2, it was mods conflicting that caused it. However it did not cause any fps problems, just a thought though..

Are you enabling vsync in the game? I seem to recall there was an issue with the game where it was beneficial to disable vsync in the actual game, but then force it on in the drivers (that might have been the fix to enable 60fps with vsync on, but I can't quite remember).

This is correct, for Dead Space

I tried this for bf3 and got a lot of tearing and juddering on my PC. Turned it off and it seemed much better again. Screen is 60hz. Is there anything else I can try as my PC is not fast enough to use vsync ?

Also check out D3DOverider, with this force v-sync on and triple buffer. That will stop your screen tearing at no performance loss.

Thanks, this actually fixed it. I tried Afterburner and it limited my frames to 60 but I was still getting tearing.

D3DOverrider with the Force VSYNC, Force Tripple buffering setting forced it on and locked it to 60fps VSYNC rather than the games built in stupid 30fps VSYNC.

Buttery smooth now and no mouse lag! :D

Had to disable VSYNC in the game as you mention, this is where I was going wrong last night I think when I couldnt get D3DOverrider to work.

Your point is?? He wanted the screen tearing to stop, so forcing v-sync in D3DOverider does this without performance loss like in-game v-sync

There's no difference in the vsync method, it's triple buffering that improves performance when using vertical synchronisation but introduces input lag.

Dxtory

Has an option to 'limit video fps' so you can set it to what you want, on a per game profile basis. I tried it with a couple of games such as batman AC and arma 2 and it worked an absolute treat. Sometimes nicer to have a steady 40fps if you don't have the grunt to maintain 60 than fluctuating up and down.

Thanks for the advice guys, normally I get 60fps or more in game but it does sometimes drop below 60fps. I think I will just stay as I am as the tearing is not that bad at all compared to when I limited FPS.

If I turn force tripple buffering off I see and feel no difference. If I turn force Vsync off, the FPS shoots up to 200+ fps and I get tearing. If I turn VSync on in game, I get 30 FPS and mouse stutter.

So whatever voodoo D3DOverrider is doing, its locking my frames to 60 fps with no lag and no tearing, something I couldnt get the CCC to do or Afterburner.
