FPS - Mouse+Keyboard or Pad?

Having played on consoles more than PCs for the last few years, for everything bar mmorpgs and RTS games where a M+K is essential, I prefer a pad. It feels more natural and if you are playing others on consoles it is at least a level playing field. It is also nice to kick back with a pad rather than hunched over the M+K.

However, if you are multiplayer FPSing on the PC the M+K combo is the only way to go. For this reason, I no longer FPS on the PC.

Since I only use my Laptop for the odd RTS game now it is really a moot point for me anyway, although I would use a pad for PC games if I had any that needed it.

There was a time though when the idea of using a pad over an M+K filled me with terror.

Why is the default reaction that only one of the two options is a valid and useful input device?

Sure, keyboard & mouse is, for many of us in the PC Games forum, the preferred input method for many games, however why does the slightest thought even beginning to speculate about the merest possibility of crossing someone's mind to use a pad for games invoke such crazy and sometimes outright hostile responses!?

For FPS and RTS, I'd prefer to use a keyboard/mouse, but for a driving game, or a game such as Batman: Arkham Asylum or Tomb Raider, the 360 pad I use is preferred.

That's why I have both!

Agreed, but this thread is about KB+M vs pads in PC fps games, and in that respect people who use pads are like the people who were still turning with the keyboard when Quake II was out.

Evening,

As the title suggests. What is your opinion on which to use for FPS games?

I bought a xbox controller a while back for Crysis 2 but soon changed back to mouse when i found it far to sensitive for snipping etc. I'd end up spraying bullets everywhere but the target.

When i play FPS on xbox this isn't an issue

I jumped into BF3 on launch day for a couple of hours but felt the sensitivity was way to high for mouse so had to drop it right down.

In general what do people use contols wise and how high is the sensitivity?

Makes me feel like I'm losing any skills i used to have when i can't even control using high sensitivity.

Or is high sensitivity something you need to get used to?

Hmmmm

Where you wanting to change the zoom sens or the looks sens? They are independent in the control setup for bf so there should be some way of making it work. The other option is dropping your DPI/driver sens.

Mouse and keyboard, anyone with any other answer is wrong. Racing and football games are the only games that can use a controller imo

i think with gta and mafia 2 i used both kb and mouse, and pad. kb+mouse for shooty bits :D

consoles probably always have some aim assasistance i think, even with it "off"

imo its mouse thats the big advangtage. with a controllers now you got axis for movement, rather than on-off. helps if you wanna walk and not run

I admit that is a but satisfying to move your character in Crysis 2 with the analog stick. You push left stick a little- he moves a little. You push some more -he walks a little faster... But when it comes to shooting it's a catastrophe... I spray bullets everywhere...

So , what i did is hold xbox pad with my left hand and push left stick to move and hold mouse with the right hand to shoot!

Anyone else tried that?

FPS - always keyboard and mouse.
3rd Person - personally depends on the game. Mafia II and GTA IV I use pad and keyboard and mouse. Pad is for driving. Just Cause 2 I use only the pad as mouse control is pants.
Driving - unless really arcade style, use a wheel.
