So, I've been bugged by this for a while, I've got some CS:GO crates, I have NO intention on spending money to open them. None. What is the need for skins these days?

This question sparked from this reply in the thread about spending money on games:

csgo , prob over £300 total lol crates , skins and keys

I hope you don't mind me using you as an example fella. Anyway, it's insane, I've recently got back into BC2 and there are no such things and it's wonderful. No micro transactions, just hard work to unlock the weapons you would like.

Well with cs:go all weapons are unlocked from day 1, skins are purely aesthetic and gives no competitive edge.

They are purely optional. I, personally just open cases in the hope of getting a rare item to make a tidy profit

I thought the skins were to pay for the development of the game and to go towards the tournaments etc, plus making valve a tidy sum which isn't a bad thing.... come on HL3 lol

Also "One of the reasons I didn't get into CS:GO. They made it casual and TF2-ish." I don't actually find the skins make any difference to the game.

If you play competitive all the time its not casual at all. They have just added some other game modes to make it more available to a wider range of people.

I don't understand this part of some games. I don't really get why anyone would be so willing to collect intangible items to the extent of paying actual money for them, especially when they don't actually do anything.

As such, I don't purchase those sort of things. The only skins I've ever actually bought were Killing Floor character skins as part of a larger pack that included a load of new weapons during a sale.

One of the reasons i didn't get into CS:GO. They made it casual and TF2-ish.
They made it the opposite surely. They gave it a ladder, comp rules, balancing and on-going support. All the things you see as casual already where in CS as other maps be it DM, WC3 mode, casual servers with full armour / money each round etc.... Valve just made these easier to get into without the need for the server browser.

While CS:GO is paid for (but it's pretty cheap) the majority of skins in games stuff offset some other revenue lost. Dota 2 is free, skins and nik-naks offset it's opex / the international. Skins to CS:GO i sort of see as paying the operational side of CS:GO, servers and ongoing tweaks (although valve has been a bit weird on GO compared to dota2). This method is surely preferred over the unlock system of LoL/others and considering that, I'm happy for it to exist as there is no impact to gameplay. Games which hide away a bunch on content behind the paywall are OK and give you a goal a guess which keeps people addicted but ultimately I feel that they are depriving the player of the best experience in the game.

I tend to agree with OP to an extent. I quite like the idea of people having different looking weapons in game but the idea of paying money (a lot of money) is ridiculous. It would be way better if they developed the game to have a weapon 'customisation' section in the options menu where you can spray paint/ design your weapons to look how you want. It's amazing how such a simple thing that could be added to the game to make it better I would never happen because steam/valve charge £1.50 a pop to 'take a gamble' and unlock 1 skin, which is very likely to be worth about 10p on the fake market that have created. For the record I love csgo, the skin/ drops thing is just rubbish.

They cant allow custom art on the guns, for the same reasons that stickers are pre-placed, otherwise you would end up with a LOT of penis guns/other objectionable content which is much harder to vet than simple text. Remember user sprays?

Also, by artificially limiting the supply of cool guns they make them rare and thus valuable. Don't look at it as "I gambled 2 quid and only ended up with a skin worth 10p", instead "I play this game a ton, I want to be unique and have a different skin". You might get lucky and get a skin worth a ton (due to their manipulation) but its not the target.

There was never a problem with sprays. People can have whatever spray they want unless the public server has specific rules and competitive has always blocked them. Also I don't see how you would have loads of penis type guns. I didn't mean people would be able to upload pictures to stick on them. I meant the game would have a database of colours and texture effects, decals etc that you could choose from.

There was never a problem unless you objected to staring at pornography while playing CS :P

Decals can be scaled and stacked in pretty creative fashions, its why the stickers in GO are pre-allocated to specific locations (some of which are rubbish).

im selling m9 90% fade FN for £175(bank transfer), better then spending money on cases!!! if your looking to spend money dont waste it on cases! its far cheaper to buy what ever skin you want out right.. instead of hoping to get it in a case.

crates and skins are just cash cows in reality.

i have spent money on opening cases and have reaped the rewards. so im one of the lucky ones.

i would advise not to fall into the trap though

What rewards though? A pretty skin for a weapon?

You do realise some knives you get from cases sell for thousands right? I'm pretty sure I remember him getting a pretty nice knife, so I'm sure he made atleast £100.

Ahhh, why on earth would people pay that amount for stuff???? lol.

Well, I won't be buying any cases, but for a couple of pound, I'll open what I have. Might help go toward GTA V... But yea, micro transaction cash cows is what CS:GO and any games that do the same. Greedy devs.

Eh I don't really consider it greedy, and some people enjoy spending money on things they enjoy. Some people have played CS for over 10 years, £100 for something you're going to see for hundreds of hours to come every match you play isn't really too bad. A knife is nice to have.

It is not a pay to win model. So I have absolutely no problem with it.

In fact it is quite nice getting some skins and if I fancy spending a few quid on keys I will.

If people want to spend lots of money on skins that is up to them. It does not benefit them in game whatsoever, so the game is not biased.

I bought my copy of CSGO almost entirely with money made crates/guff from TF2. Anything I find in GO, goes straight on the Marketplace.

If the devs/modellers get a cut of the money, good for them!
