FPS that don't require server to play

I believe Black Ops requires you to connect to their servers to play, but are there any (relatively decent) FPS out there that I could just connect to another person and play 1v1 without having to connect to a server or anything? And if so, is it in the game or do I have to fiddle with console options and stuff?

MW 2 is locally hosted and has a 1v1 mode.

You can host your own server in many cases. Listen servers rather than dedicated.

As said, if you can't host a private game yourself, you should be able to download a dedicated server client for the majority of titles.

Then just run it up in the background, and provided your network is setup oL, you and your friend should be able to connect and play.
