To me it's important having a bit of suspense building up between enemies so less enemies are better to a certain extent!
Gets a bit overwhelming one enemy after another every few seconds! Anyone else agree?

I think Bioshock has the perfect balance of collecting stuff, searching and working out what to do next (some RPG elements there!)

Thought Crysis, half life 2, STALKER, splinter cell, fear and ghost recon were also well balanced. Any other suggestions?

I think there should be more first person shooters with RPG elements.
The 'sandbox' open ended nature 'GTA style' is also very good but quite rare!

Any games that are overly intense that do your head in? (unreal tournament 3 unfortunately does my head in but do think it's very good if in the mood!)

Original Half Life, Tomb Raider 2. You may or may not have problems getting these to work properly on a modern PC though. As you no doubt have a steam account, you could buy HL source through that.

Delta Force Black Hawk Down is anouther interesting and challanging game but it is some what linear. Edit: On second thought, you would probably get nothing out of this game. No puzzles to be solved, just a few hard tactical scenarios. However your enemy rushes in numbers and is pathetically easy to defeat singularly.

Maybe consider Aliens VS Predator 2?

Half Life 2 Episode 1 inviolved a lot of thinking, even though its liniar. Ep 2 was less so. XIII is just brilliant because you have to think about the story a lot.

XIII = 13

An awsome game available for the PC now for about £2 because nobody bought it. Its amazing, untill the ending...

You don't have to use your brain to aim etc? Do you mean FPS's with puzzle elements? Only one I can think of is Portal, which has allready been mentioned.

Not strictly puzzles but games with more substance to them than just shooting non stop!
Maybe i should have titled the thread differently.
Yes portal was very good, didn't really think it was a FPS though!
Now Prey was like a shooter and portal combined! That was a great game!

Has to be portal, if you can complete advanced bonus map 18 without a video walkthrough you're a genius! Or maybe I just suck at portal..

agreed

its not a FPS as such as theres no shooting

but its first person and a proper puzzle game. I had to use a video walkthrough twice when i just got mental block and couldnt think where to go.

Unreal 2 actually requires you to think a bit, because it has several 'set piece' levels where you have to defend an area. Choosing where to set up force fields, turrets, and deploy teammates etc.

Brothers in Arms: The Road to Hill 30 had an interesting concept in that you have control over two squads. You can view a tactical map and also give orders to your your squads, e.g. you tell your fire team to pin down the enemies and the send your assault team up alongside a wall to flank them. So in theory it is a "thinking man's FPS", the problem of course is that it gets very repetitive and is a decidedly average game.

As you liked Bioshock, I think you should check out Deus Ex. It gives you lots of different ways of playing, not only in terms of character development, but also the way in which you tackle different tasks.

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast has some puzzles and platformy bits. I found them frustrating, but it may be your cup of tea.

Tribes: Vengeance is a somewhat underrated game which is reasonably innovative. Most of the time your character has a jet pack, which makes combat a bit more interesting.
