Fractal Design Define XL - redefined

Like some on here, we like to not follow the norm, and try to do something unique, makes it all the more challenging.

So here I was with a dillema, most of the current crop of cases like the Corsair series and Silverstone series and LianLi and a number of Coolermasters are commonly used for liquid cooled configurations. It was hard enough trying to find a case which no one has liquid cooled before at an extreme level, ie. custom work rather than an off-the-shelf H50/H70 etc... ;)

So....

I came upon Fractal Design - I fell in love with the simple design and solid build, the build quality of the XL was just outstanding. The powder-coating was top-notch, and fairly resilient to regular scratching etc... And to top it off, it was a pre-silenced case with some serious weight to it (great for me as I have a few mastiffs which have a habit of sleeping next to the case and knocking them over!)...

The box-of-tricks which controls all the fans and pump is the wonderful mCubed T-Balancer BigNG.
With the pump at 50% duty, and the fans at 2% duty, regular use and idle barely hits 30c! On full load with Prime (heat-gen mode) it barely peaks 49c.
This is a 3.8oc'd quad 6600, with an FSB of 470.

I'm in love with this build, not only does this case look the part, but cable-management and hose management is out of this world. I've literally hid everything. Also have added my own liquid level sensor to the res so that a blue led flashes with a buzz sound when it gets halfway ;)

The hoses have plenty of slack to work on this board without even having to deal with watercooling hoses, the idea was a clean build that one could jump into and switch ram and CPU and even swap out the MB without barely any extra effort on-top of say an air-cooled configuration.

Anyway, enough of the chit-chat, heres the pictures, hope you enjoy... I'm not much of a photographer, but I did my best with the little compact camera...

2 x EK XT Dual 120mm Hi-Flow Radiators
1 x EK Supreme LT waterblock
1 x Swiftech Chipset waterblock
1 x Danger Den GPU Full Card waterblock
1 x Swiftech v2 Reservoir
1 x DDC 18w Pump with XSPC Hi-Flow Top
1/2" ID plumbing between radiators, res, pump
Dual 8mm OD plumbing to Legaris hi-flow Banjo fittings to CPU waterblock
Single 8mm OD plumbing to Legaris hi-flow Banjo fitting to Chipset waterblock
Single 8mm OD plumbing to Legaris hi-flow Banjo fitting to GPU waterblock
The usual drain-ball-valve and Bitspower fillport, etc etc...
Pump and fans controlled by the mCubed T-Balancer BigNG
Yate Loon SH's 140mm and 120mm

...

Case was bought from OC, so too was the XFX PSU! Would have bought the rest of the bits here, but OCUK are still wayyyyy behind on the watercooling components stock selection side of things - sort it out already! Could have saved a packet and a half if I bought everything here LOL!

Nice!

I'm planning on getting a define xl tomorrow. But air cooled.

I see you got rid of the 180mm fan and cut out the roof and bottom of the side panel.

Oh you will love the case mate!

amazing build quality!

its bleeding heavy, so dont drop the bugger when you move it around hehe

Yeah, it was a pain in the backside cutting nearly 1.5mm thick high grade steel!

But in the end it was worth it.

Theres a lot more cutting that went on in there, but its all behind the scenes.

Also that big fan that comes stock at the top is dead quiet and seems to push a fair amount of air, so I think you'll be just fine on an air cooled setup.

did you build that pc so you can join every pc forum out there to post it up on? lol...seriously

anyway nice rig, even though we wont be seeing you again:cool:

Been a member of xtremesystems for 5 years, so thought why not join the sites where i bought my parts from too.

Why? is there are an issue with that?

Looking good. Did you run anything on air in there before you installed the water cooling mod?

Naa, not in this case. I specifically bought this case because of the possibilities due to its dimensions and how effortlessly a dremel could mutate it for my needs.

Looks awesome the build

Ive been checking the highend cases for a while now and loved my fractual R2 case, R3 is pretty much the same just a few minor and better tweeks but its lacking in the space/long vga support and more bays/hdd support department, but looking at the other cases from lian lis/silverstone/coolermasters there all good but fractual XL just seems to cover all my wish list :)

Totally agree, the lianli's and silverstones are stunning cases, but you sure do pay a premium for aluminium, though working with them cases would be childs-play, dremel has aluminium for breakfast! But what I like about the Fractal cases is the features/value perspective, I feel you get a lot more for your hard earned bucks with these cases and to top it off they look a dogs undercarriage, cant argue with that.

IMO, the Fractal's are what the Antec P series should have been. The XL width is perfect, i think all tower cases should be at least 240mm wide and ideally 260mm.

Btw, the XFX 850w wired PSU is also a bargain and a half, effectively the same thing as its modular bigger brother but less notes. The thing runs soo cool and quiet you'd think its got a dead fan in it.

Fantastic build!! What ramsinks are you using to cool your mosfets?

You know what, I honestly cant remember, I know they werent cheap, i'm thinking maybe Swiftech or DangerDen? hmmm.... its been a while... but they work very well with virtually minimum airflow and [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], and the MOSfets rarely touch 50c

This build was done using my old quad to prepare for the massivo upgrade I'm planning right now. Just holding back for the BullDozer, to see if it exceeds or is an epic fail.
