Just built a SFF PC in a Fractal Ridge case with a Ryzen 5 9600x and a RTX 5070

All gone well, 2 x 140mm fans keep the RTX cool with good air flow through but the CPU is getting temps of 65-80 when at idle or general windows use

The CPU has a Be Quiet! Pure Rock LP cooler fitted which has a 92mm fan, I've seen recommendations for the Thermalright AXP120-X67; any ideas or suggestions to help on this?

What are your ambient temps?

What sort of temperatures are you seeing under a sustained typical load, such as a gaming session?

Looking at reviews of the HSF I wouldn't be overly surprised with those temps, although they do seem a touch high if reaching the 80's. Hold in mind most reviews use an open air bench, and the 9600X can be quite aggressive when boosting.

I'd monitor usage a bit more, consider setting up a fan profile for both CPU and GPU. There's a chance your GPU is idling at 0rpm and will only start spinning its fans up after it reaches a certain temp, that's technically fine for the GPU but it'll still be spilling heat over onto your processor so having it spin up to 15-20% as a minimum should remain silent and help with overall temperatures.

Double check the cooler is mounted correctly and as mentioned the film between the HSF and chip has been removed, easily done and the Pure Rock LP can be fiddly.

After that consider undervolting the CPU, your motherboard might even have an eco mode where it'll do all the work for you, if you limit it to a 45W TDP you should see little to no performance loss in games and enjoy notably cooler temperatures.

Replaced the CPU that came with it with the AXP120-X67 and redid the thermal paste

Now idling at 50-55 and a lot quieter with the 120mm fan

On the GPU, using HWMonitor its showing at 29c whilst doing general windows tasks and fan is at 0rpm. The RTX 5070 has a switch between performance or quiet and its on quiet currently

Not tried any gaming on it yet, wanted to get the CPU in a better position before I do

much better temps. the Be Quiet! Pure Rock LP is only rated for 100watts as it has only 3 6mm heat pipes and relies on a thinner copper cold plate. However, the Thermalright AXP120-X67 is rated for 165watts and has 6 6mm heat pipes for better heat dissipation and the fin array sits above the cpu allowing better circulation of air from the fan :)

Seems a good cooler for the price to be fair

The only time I’ve heard it spin up and get warm (~80 degrees) was when I installed hogwarts legacy and it was setting up all the shaders on first run
