Frame rates

~30fps+ in a slow game (RPG, RTS) and ~70fps+ in a fast game (FPS, etc.)

The human eye optimally processes images at ~72fps, so if you want perfect smoothness you'll need a card that can power your graphics at 75hz or higher with v-sync enabled.

"Acceptable" however is a different matter entirely. I am happy playing Oblivion at ~35fps average, because it's not a fast action game, but I go a bit mad if Battlefield 2 or some other shooter drops below 60fps and I'll turn down settings if I have to.

best way is if you have half life 2, type in the console max fps 60/50/40/30/20/10 and you can see the differences. anything below 60 fps for me is distracting and ruins my gameplay, but some people are happy with 30, or even 20. Above 60 fps you wont see a big difference.

what makes a lot of difference is when you have 100 fps one minute and the next 15. a good minimum frame rate is very important.

It does depend on the type of game however.... for a multiplayer FPS game, I like to have a minimum framerate in excess of 100fps. Certainly anything under 75fps is pretty nasty.

For single player games I can go down as low as about 45fps. Anything under that is positively unpleasant. Typically when choosing what settings to use, I have a target average fps of around 60-80fps usually, which means that the minimum fps hopefully won't drop down below 45 very often.

It's all a bit subjective depending on the individual concerned, but one thing I would say to those who think 40fps is fine, try playing a game with a constant 100fps for an extended period (a few days), and then go back to 40fps (e.g. capping your FPS). You will notice the difference then. Years ago I used to play with 50fps and considered it fine, but I know better now.
