I'm trying to size some picture frames for some pictures I've got and I'm being an idiot when it comes to working out what I need as the framing company are telling me one thing, but my measurements are telling me another.

I have two existing frames and want the new frames to be as close as possible to these. The pictures are 280x430mm and my current frames have an external measurement of 412x562mm. I'm using a 30mm frame with a 5mm rebate. From my maths, I'd need a 45mm mount to make the new frames the same size as the old ones given the 5mm rebate in the frame and a 4mm overlap on the picture in all directions. The framing company are telling me I need 40mm? I've spoken to others and they've all come back with different sizes again!

30 + 45 + 272 + 45 + 30 = 422
30 + 45 + 422 + 45 + 30 = 572
Minus 10mm from the total sizes as the frame rebate covers 5mm of the mount in each direction = 412 x 562mm.

I'm not going mad am I?!

Everybody will have differing tolerances for it due to there needing to be some clearance for the mount to fit into the frame which would account for the difference in sizes given, however you calculations look correct to me, perhaps they are talking about 40mm being the visible width of the mount?

That's fine, I just want the same size border and frame around the entire picture, otherwise it would look odd with a different size mount at the top and bottom to keep it the same ratio.

Yeah, that doesnt matter - ignore me.

Does the bevel cut into the mount account for 5mm? Probably not.

Yeh, there is a 5mm rebate on the frame which effectively hides 5mm of the mount so on a 45mm mount, only 40 would be visible.

I mean the edge of the mount where it overlaps the picture will have a bevel cut into it, I assume?
One side of the mount (the rear - against the picture) will be 45mm but the other side (front - visible face) will be less than that. Possibly 40mm?

Ah sorry, yeh it'll be bevelled but the total mount size should still be 45mm. I think I'll just go with my measurements and hope for the best. It shouldn't be too far out and hopefully not noticeably different. If it is, I can probably sell my existing frames and buy two new ones to match now I know the measurements.
