I use to use this all the time on my old desktop

I never use to get much of a performance hit, now on my new laptop it reduces frps to 2 when recording video.

but imho the specs are not too different

Desktop
AMD Opty 1.44 (2.8ghz)
2Gigs Ram
7800GT

NoteBook
Merom 1.83ghz
2Gigs Ram
Go 7600GT

so im wondering why im getting such a hit now

May i suggest recording a demo, then use fraps to create an .avi afterwards.

Maybe a little bit but performance will never be especially good when recording realtime video. Personally I wouldn't consider it on anything less than RAID0 Raptors at the bare minimum.

As mentioned by far the best solution is to record from demo playback if it's available in your game.

what fps have u got the video to record to ?

i had this sorta problem with my pc dn i was getting like 60 - 80 fps on fear on good days lol but when i started recording it went haywire - i found out some time later i had fraps set to record at 30 fps

i was reading earlier, during a powercut, that..
uncompressed, 640×480, 24 bit colour, 30 fps equals 26 MB per second, 1560 MB per minute.

if thats correct, then that may help determine a drive that's up to the job.

was recording at half size

remember audio too

i just checked my fraps video folder - i have 24 *short* clips and the folder is over 5GB

i just use windows movie maker to convert it

I recorded a couple of halo games the other day and half size 100fps clips came to 160GB :\

Record, look at, throw away the carp and encode the ones you wanna keep in vegas or wmm.

The lower performance of the laptop is almost definately the hdd. Does you main comp have more than one hard drive?

Specs? Res? half size?

Thats a pretty vague comment with no background info mate

Aye 'spose it is :p

Running in 1280x1024, details pushed up. Can't off the top of my head remember if I record half-size/full-size, but I'm pretty sure its full-size.

E6600, 4gb ocz pc6400 ram, 2x8800 gtx, dumped onto a raptor - hdd is very important with fraps.

I'm not surprised. 100fps is just ludicrously excessive for recording gameplay. I'd go for 25 or 30fps. I've said this in another Fraps thread, but the idea with this program is that you record a demo (in game) whilst you play. If you want to make a movie out of a demo, you can then play the demo and record the specific bits with Fraps whilst it's playing through. You can also setup a decent 'video config' to play your demos with (640x480 or some lower resolution than you'd normally play at -- you're not going to be uploading videos online @ 1600x1200 are you? You can also get rid of HUDs etc). If you want slow-motion parts in your video you can also do it properly by playing the demo again but setting up Fraps to record at double the speed.

Trying to play and encode at the same time is just daft, whether or not your computer can handle it.
