Freddy Adu

At the same time though, Chelsea were once interested in signing him. If he played against them pre-season and they are no longer interested, it makes you wonder whether he will be able to hack it.

Again, I hope he does though. Its always exciting to have the best young potentials in the world playing in this country's league :)

Oh...he's not good enough for Chelsea...Let's forget about his chances then!

If you'll actually read what I've said, I'm saying that Chelsea have had first hand experience of him. They have played against him and have also played against other young players like Ronaldo and Rooney. If any team is going to know of his potential from this country, it would be Chelsea.

I also said that I hope he does hack it as he is clearly a promising player.

Just try not to rate him based on his career on your Football Manager game.

I have to say that a two week trial is a far better way to get an idea of a players capability for a club than a single friendly game. Plus the lad is still pretty young and can learn a lot from the better coaches in europe. I suspect he's an over hyped player but you never know.

You're right it is, but if Chelsea would have seen anything from him in that game they surely would have tried to give him a trial too? But as far as we are aware, they haven't.

Being at a club like Manchester United though will only benefit him. Either them or Arsenal anyway.

"And he goes for the rocket shot !!!"

LOL they dont have a clue do they

It's a shame america aint a football nation their population pool and natural competitive attitude would spawn lots of great players

I agree with Radikal here, the guy is 17 for cripes sake, it is not his fault he has been touted as the greatest thing ever in America. I don't agree with the comment that if Chelsea don't want him, he's basically not good enough and won't cut it. They eventually got their boy before the summer in a certain Obi Mikel and he's turned out to be a different player to the one they thought.

It comes down to the opinion of the manager of a club whether or not they think a certain individual will fit into their team or style of play. If Mourinho has studied him and come to the conclusion that he doesn't want him, then fair enough, he won't be going to Chelsea. But Mourinho hasn't exactly developed any sort of youth development in the time he has been at Chelsea. He'd much rather splash the cash on a proven player than one who may take a few years to fully develop.

Chelsea could have bought an 18 year old Rooney a few years back but did not. I suppose that means he won't cut it either... :p

Finally got round to watching the clip at work.

5 mins, 5 goals. Surely there's a better clip :p I remember seeing him in a training session on the Nike website about a year ago and he looked a good player. But its pointless hyping him up.

Oh, and Lee Trundle has his own highlights reel on YouTube, I wouldn't say he's a world beater.

I never said Chelsea don't want him so he isn't good enough. Chelsea could easily have afforded to gamble on him and see if he gets better but appear to have chosen not to. Maybe they will offer him a trial also. We don't know. Inter Milan offered to take him on when he was young and keep his family in the country, so they must have seen something in him too, but where is their interest?

I just think we should wait and see what he turns out like first. But let me point out, again, I hope he is a success!

Lets see if he can cut it in the Prem. American soccer and the Prem are totally different things. Both play football but both also play different styles of football. America is a bit slow though it is enjoyable to watch whereas the Prem is fast 1st touch football, can Adu handle it?

There is actually a huge debate as to his age, he has no birth certificate so many suspect that he is much older which tbh he does. He wouldn't be the first player of African origion to have a made up age Tribo West is widely regarded as being at least 3-4 (if not more) years older than he says and there is a huge debate as to how old Roger Milla actually was when he played in USA94 with many believing him to be over 50!

Excatley.

Lets not be too quick to use Chelsea as the barometer for all things good in football. Im sure if Utd were in for Dorris the Tea Lady, Chelsea would have had her on trial for a few weeks before hand. Adu's direct style of play and pace may not be what Chelsea are looking for in a midfielder cum striker when you consider they have Wright-Phillips, Robben and Joe Cole fighting it out for one spot as it is.

Playing with better quality players can and will develop his game. Is he hyped ? Undoubtedly. Is he as bad as people think ? Unlikely A lot of the naysayers are basing their argument on the fact that he plays in the MLS as the only reason why he couldn't cut the mustard over here. Hardly a convincing argument

I can't believe people are taking what I said about Chelsea as players being judged as good or bad based on whether Chelsea are interested.

I'm saying if he was AS good as people are saying, Chelsea would have shown an interest at least just to stop a rival getting him with the added bonus that he could infact be a very handy player one day. But they haven't, which MIGHT SUGGEST that he is not actually as good as his 5 minute 5 goal highlight reel makes out...

The fact is that you are still using Chelsea as the best possible judge for a player. What I am getting at is that they are not, and should not be used like that. Again this comes down to personal opinion on the manager's part, the guy whose decision it is to bring a player to their club.

I agree that Adu is overhyped but through no fault of his own, he plays in a relatively poor league in America where they are looking for a player to boost viewing figures and they are trying to do that with Adu for their soccertainment! ;)

Chelsea and many other teams in Europe have passed up on players, some you regret, some you don't. This is no different. We (Man Utd) have 2 weeks to assess him and his ability, personally I say it is a great idea, there's only so much you see from a player during a game. Watching them train, how they train, how they relate to other players, etc are all important factors to see whether or not he can step up to a great player or a good player.

I used Chelsea because they played against him pre-season, as has been mentioned... So they'd already seen him.

If it had been Watford, I'd have said Watford..
