Free alternatives?

List some good free alternatives to software that you have to pay for to save us skint people some cash!

For instance, imo best free alternative to ms word is abiword.

cheers, some great utilities here. but some of them are for programs that are free to begin with, rather than alternatives to pay-software! (like media player/vlc for instance).

Keep it up though! can anyone recommend any good free alternatives to Nero/Encarta?

I also agree, I like Abiword more then Openoffice (which is too overbloated). Anyone know of something like Abiword but for spreadsheets (Excel type program).
