Ive been using my 30 day trial on Virtual DJ but sadly it has now expired and im now looking for free mixing software, can someone point me in the right direction?

sadly no , i ended up buying v dj last year when it had some sort of offer though:(

pricey but i looked at it as the cost of a couple of computer games or something , spent allot of time on it just messing about so its almost been worth it :o

hopefully buying some cdjs over summer like

Try Sam DJ, I'm not sure how long the freebie lasts though.

Google it, there''s Sam Party DJ and Sam Broadcaster for online radio.

Not entirely relevant but what do people see in virtual DJ?

It's horrible to use, you have to get different skins just to make the damned thing full screen and the sound quality is atrocious. Traktor is far superior although i can't get the damned thing to work properly on Vista

sorry i disagree there :( traktor cant keep 2 beats matched for crap, you have to click sync every 2 seconds

my personal Pc fave for on the fly stuff is Torq but its not free, if you buy one of their midi controllers (X-Session Pro) you get a free copy of the lite version though :)

i've not found any software that can properly emulate decks apart from ableton, but that requires lots of setting up etc to get the most out of, but i would personally strech to £70 odd and get what i mentioned above:

traktor is poor , got a version of it with my midi controller and found it really bad

ableton is the daddy , didn't know about it when i bought vdj mind

its also silly expensive unless your a pirate

fact, you don't have a 'sync' button on a set of decks, tracktor i've always found fine, better than the likes of atomix or anything else i've tried on the PC, learn to do it proper, like you would on decks and it's fine for mixing.

i do mix on CD and vinyl, and have no trouble beatmatching on either

traktor cant hold a mix for ****, the beats always drift, if a technology thats been around for 100 years and involves plastic being scraped by a needle can hold a mix why cant a super duper computer program

ps - i am rather drunk

edit - if the rolleyes offends you in any way its cos i mis-intrepreted your post, but i am rather drunk

exactly what i found ,

you cant really compare software dj ing and "traditional dj ing anyway , both have there advantages and disadvantages.

the looping and effects etc of software and cdjs make them appeal allot more to me

as for them being "easier to use" who cares, when im out im too intoxicated to tell between perfect and good mixing anyway , aslong as the tracks are great and theres no trainwrecks im happy

i find it so much easier on CD/Vinyl, for some reason i feel limited with PC Djing and held back sort of, nothing like a mixer and a pair of decks imo :D

edit - the above statement may not make any sense, because i am currently drunk and stoned

Ive never personally understood why people would even consider a computer program to really DJ ?!

I mean ok fair enough for messing around on, but to actually fully mix to?

Buy a cheap set of turntables second hand, see if you like it. If you do flog em on and get a nice set of technics in. The amount i mix now, i will swear heart and hand down with vinyl. I bought my decks about 6 months ago, and they are one, if not the greatest things i have ever bought.

Vinyl does cost a lot, but when you get the massive tune from through the front door freshly cut nothing beats it.

So ye, dont buy a program, get a set of turntables for the cheap on ebay and try it properly, that is my only advice.

hmmm i partially agree, nothing beats ableton for pre-planned sets though (radio shows etc) i dont like using it on the fly though, but if i want to record a planned set its ableton all the way :)

i find tracktor great if you use the jog facility it holds a mix perfect just like my trusty 1200mk5 :D

but i use it through the middle chanel on my allen&heath xone 32 as i cant work out how to monitor (pfl) inside tractor witout hearing the other deck

so basicaly i just use it on my pc through the middle chanel as another deck

Erm, don't blame traktor if the mp3 doesn't have a steady bpm.

I used traktor for 2 years before I got my decks, using rips of my own records I made on my mate's turntables.

Never had any issues with slipping beats.

what im trying to say is if you sync 2 tracks in traktor, drop it on cue and click sync once to get it in time, it drifts off, thats not the mp3s fault because the same mp3 works fine on my cdjs

torq seems to do a better job than traktor though and its the one i'd choose

andy - out of all the dj software, traktor seems the worst when it comes to keeping beats in line

yeah i found the same, use vdj and a midi controlller or ableton when i can be bothered but it takes allot of work getting stuff set up if you want to use it "live" , should be buying some cdjs over summer anyway
