yeah you can assign anything midi , its just a bit of a mes son the first time,
just go in config > remote control , make sure midi is enabled then click config in that box
after that i think you just need to click add then a new window opens , touch the button,dial whatever on your midi controller and its number/name shows up in the centre box , then just find whatever you want it to alter
its not as easy to do as ableton but you can get there in the end
edit - infact i just noticed the latest version you can click load and there is already a preset for the x session , god knows what it assigns to what cos my controller isnt here to try
also you need to plug it in and turn it on before you open vdj
