Hi,

Has anyone here got any experience with the above for simple 2d game design?

I've seen a few software names banded around, but am not sure what would be best to start with. I have next to no programming experience, so I expect something like Unity would be out of the question?

The only thing that discourages me a little, is the fact just about every art design (tiles, trees, characters and so on) that comes with any piece of software looks similar, and appears to be along the lines of child like / japanese art.

Any advice would be very welcome. TIA. :)

In all honesty, I think Unity is fantastic and is most definitely worth a look at! There's plenty of guides around the net that will guide you through everything you ever need to know as well! Certainly don't discount it thinking that the programming will be difficult! I had next to no real experience (tinkering with some LUA coding from WoW, Operation Flashpoint and the ArmA series) and it's quite easy to pick up once you get into it!

Another vote for Unity - I use it professionally and then when I get home I use it for fun. Unityscript is easy to learn - hell even I managed it and it got me interested enough to knuckle down and learn C++.

Whilst you are at learn to use Blender for your modelling needs if you chose to try 3d - again takes some effort but well worth the results.

Start of with Game Maker - it's decisively simplistic but there is a lot of depth to it (only if you want to use those specific features of course). Best part about it is the community- jsut check out their forums, there are loads of people willing and able to help you with a problem at a moments notice, as well as providing a wealth of content to get you into GM, such as tutorials, etc.

RPG Maker is one of the most common names thrown around, though given it's older JRPG stylings, it may not be what you're looking for graphically. Also, the free version does have some restrictions, so depending on what you're wanting to do with it, it may not be enough.

Multimedia Fusion 2 is supposed to be pretty good. I've played a couple of the games which were developed using it (Odd Planet and Pitiri 1977) and they were actually good fun.

It's not free, but it was available as a humble weekly last year. I picked it up for a few quid but haven't tried it yet. You might be able to buy it cheaply from someone wanting to sell on their unused product key.

As said RPG maker is good, a few of the steam games that go through Greenlight and end up being on Steam are made with this software.

Be sure to update the thread with the results :) Plenty of people here who'd be happy to give constructive feedback, if you wanted it.
