I have just recently returned from 4 months in Dubai. Fantastic place for a holiday; once.
Unfortunately when you scrutinise Dubai it is just like like Vegas; plastic and tacky. Everything has to be bigger and better. ALso, once you have done the limited things there are to do once, you don't feel the need to repeat anything.
Places to visit:
Burj Khalifa
Wild Wadi (preferred this over any of the other parks) If you work for an airline you can get in for 50 AED instead of the almost 200 AED fee!
Dubai Mall (indoor ice skating rink and aquarium is awesome!) Also, the fountain display is very good. Try to get a table at TGI Friday and sit out on the balcony for the best display.
Mall of the Emirates (more upmarket!).
Ferrari World
Barasti bar (only place you can drink alcohol on a public beach and apparently the 20th best bar in the world!! I beg to differ)
Food and drink is amazing with many places offering quality all you can eat deals, for about £10 extra you can get all you can drink added (alcohol).
But............
Any longer than a holiday and you start to see the cracks; prostitution on a large scale, organised crime and of course the 'slavery'.
Not really slavery in that sense, yes their passports are taken from then upon arrival and yes they are paid less than minimal wage and yes they live in up to 8 man rooms in places called 'labour camps' - but as i was told by the labourers they would not be earning what they do if they were in their home countries - they are in a position to send money home to care for their families. It was also said to me that if they didn't like it they would look for work elsewhere or leave (this guy had been there 20+ years!)
Would i go back there to work? Hell yes, but at least you now have the real picture and an understanding. So, there you go.................
