Free or Not??

Hey Gurus of the Mobile world!

I have just got me HTC Desire HD and was wondering if the GPS feature in terms of the Locations App is free?

I know I have to pay for the 3G data (I have it switched off atm, coz my free data contract starts in Jan) but the GPS is that free?

PS now just got to figure if I want to Root/Flash it to get rid of the Crappy Orange Apps??? !

Yes, GPS is always free, you just have to have data.

You really need to get your data plan sorted for the DHD (and satnav) to come to life. Arriving at your destination and being shown a picture of it via streetview is pure win

You still need an internet connection for it to be useful, as it still needs data to work with, unless you're using preloaded mapping software.

Yeah, the Desire HD comes with preloaded maps for the stock navigation app. Google Maps is far better though and yes, you'll need data for that.

Hey Guys

I have got a data plan set up and ready to go, but the Upgraded contract doesnt start till 8th Jan, so until then its Wi-Fi only for data.

Just installing Apps and playing at the moment, got to setup HTCsense and import contacts next.

As far as I can tell locations doesn't need a connection at all. However sometimes I seem to be driving sideways?!
Google maps can be set to navigate on wifi before you leave and will preload all the required map tiles, so long as you don't deviate from the route.
