anyone else been effected by the free range chicken shortage? thanks to c4's program last month about intense chicken rearing i haven't been able to get any for over a month now :) even tried the local butcher who claims that it's "not cost effective" to sell them

pretty crappy as i have been eating only free range chicken for a few years now.

Cant say I have as I will eat any chicken. :p

Besides Free range is more expensive, waste of money just to get what is basically the same as any other chicken. :p

Yup, everywhere we go. It used to be battery chickens would be low, with loads of free range. Now its the opposite, I haven't had chicken in over three weeks because I can't get hold of it.

In saying that, I have two fillits in the fridge that the Mrs spotted last night. Great, missed chicken.

I think those C4 programs have made a huge difference.

Grow your own?

cool what do i do - plant some free range eggs in the back garden? :p

hopefully it gets sorted soon - although i'm pretty glad that it has had this effect on the public as it has made people realise that their food comes from further than just the supermarket!

I made the change after the programmes, call it jumping on the bandwagon if you will but I still did it and I noticed there wasn't actually a lot of free range chicken in the supermarkets!

No, they'll get cold. As above, sit on them after sticking some feathers to your bum.

If this doesn't work, warm them in some boiling water for about 3 minutes. Should you not have a chicken at the end of it, eat anyway.

Good news, hopefully more battery farms will close down and go free range to take advantage of the extra demand.

Free range chickens do taste better than battery chickens. Corn fed ones even more so.

yes until people like you jumped on the free range band wagon i had a stable supply :p

Exactly. You're going to eat them so who cares if they live free with the birds and eat finest corn.

you obviously don't have the same feelings for animal welfare as other people then. i'd rather eat a chicken that has actually seen some green grass and some sunlight during it's life time - rather than 24 hours of constant light in a barn with it's beak chopped off crowded with 12 other chickens within a metre of it (up to 30 if it originated from thailand or brazil).

the jamie oliver link makes good reading (if you missed the program) as to what exactly that chicken you eat has actually been through to make it to your plate :)

Make a point of complaining at supermarkets that dont have stock of free range. The more people ask the more the message gets through and the faster the caged system will be gone.

Im a meat eater and i dont apologise for it, but im quite happy to pay a bit more for the knowledge that the animals at least didnt suffer quite as much before being butchered to fill by belly.
