can anyone recomend some good games of the free roaming variety for my 6 yr old lad? hes autistic (classic autism) and enjoys nothing more than a game which you can wander around and explore without having to do missions ect.

at the moment hes playing disneys cars which you can just wander around on the story mode, and he goes on far cry as well, i have entered a cheat to make the meanies less likely to cause trouble lol he just wanders around exploring.

also he REALLY enjoyed gta san andreas but i couldnt let him play it cos of the swear words ect. hes starting to get bored of the above two games so im looking for something else he might enjoy - does anyone know of any suitable ones or ones where i can disable meanies and gore ect? he prefers the pc but we also have an xbox, ps2 and a 360 as well

any ideas?

Operations Flash Point or Armed Assualt. You can set up your character on a map with no bad guys and with any vehicles you want.

The maps are HUGE, I'm talking life sized islands (albeit small islands) but you could drive around for an hour and not explore everything on some of the big maps!

There's quite a few driving games where you can just cruise about, e.g. Test Drive Unlimited, Need for Speed Most Wanted etc.

My sister has Asperger's Syndrome (which could crudely be described as a mild form of autism) and enjoys RPG and Strategy games; although she is a lot older so this may be something to leave for a few years.

I'm not sure if Test Drive Unlimited might be a bit too complicated for a 6 year old, but TDU has a huge map that you can just drive around on without doing any missions etc.

It's on both the PC and 360 so maybe you should give it a check out.

Just Cause ?

Still shooting, but no swearing that i can remember, and the gore is less than gta.

looks prettier than gta too :p

Huge parts of the map are water and jungle too, its like gta far cry.

So you can go for ages without seeing anyone, also you can grab a plane (anything from a little crop duster to a military jet/airliner), or a helicopter or a boat and speed around.

When I think of free roaming for kids Animal Crossing comes to mind, maybe you can treat him to a DS, there's also a free roaming transformers game for DS, what kid dosnt like big robots :)

Oblivion would be good, so much to see out on the wilderness and in the towns.

Im sure you could disable AI or just make them not attack you, sure ive seen something, ill have a look tonight.

Yeah, another vote for Oblivion.
Console command - "tai" to disable actors' AI.

If you think he'd enjoy an online game then look into wwiiol: Battleground Europe. It's subscription based though but nothing to say you can't enjoy it when he's not ;)

It's got a map that covers North france, England, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, Denmark and West Germany so it's quite big. There's a front line that moves back and forward where he'd pretty much have to start near (by near I mean somewhere along a line that's 500 miles long with rear positions). If he heads in the wrong direction he might come into the fighting but generally if you just wander around you're okay. Once you get to know the game you can make sure he spawns in in areas where there's no fighting. Or there's the training server where few people play and he can spawn in in a lot of different places in anything from tanks to planes to ships or as infantry with any weapon he wants.

If you want a simple offline game then Oblivion would probably be best. Really nice to just wander around in but he'll probably have wandered over most of it quite quickly.

cheers everyone, just been on a bidding spree :) oblivion and operation flashpoint are in the running, got out bid on everything else! ill probably go for those two and see how i do.
i didnt realise there was so many free roaming type games, thanks for all the suggestions im going to try get some of the other ones as well

cant go far wrong with operation flashpoint or even armed assault. it depends what hes exploring for really, if hes looking for hidden buildings etc then oblivion is the way to go.

but for vast landscapes then operation flashpoint or armed assault.

yeah . opf would be great . i remember doing all sorts on that game. you could explore the towns etc even ride a tractor so its not all bad :)

Test drive would be great. because its a full island and takes you a good 39minutes to drive to one side the other thats if you dont crash aswell =)

just got operation flashpoint game of the year edition for 99p :) lets see if i can get oblivion cheap as well!
test drive looks good

test drive is good . find a save game that has the game fully unlocked and let him play on singleplayer. plenty to see and do. and you can have it on manual, auto, semi auto. i dont think controls would be too complicated on auto and you could always find a steering wheel
