free schools

Free schools, opposed by the left who don't want any opportunity, but only to give everyone the same, poor experience that the worst comprehensives give.

We need a huge reform in our education system, free schools don't go far enough, we need to break the monopoly of education by the state and the teaching unions, bring back academic selection and start recognising that the real world is competitive.

Wait, you want to privatise education as well now? Good god Dolph, do you even have a line to draw?

Really Dolph, you're a good guy. You just need to realize that privatisation does not magically make everything better, and more often than not it makes everything a whole lot worse. No, current nationalized services aren't perfect. There's a lot wrong with the way they're managed. But at least they're regulated. At least they're not completely motivated by profit.

Of course, anything that requires direct access to the state monopoly of force should remain the sole domain of the state.

I much prefer the model where the state works to ensure access and standards, rather than actually provides services.

You can keep them regulated, and profit isn't a dirty word, especially when it's linked to customer satisfaction.

Which it doesn't.

Forcing any specific set of beliefs as the only option is equally repugnant and should be opposed.
If parents want to indoctrinate their children with a harmful mythology, that is their right (although it is quite a shame). However, I don't want to sponsor it through my taxes. No public money should follow kids into any kind of faith school.

Why is it in this country when we have a system that doesn't perform satisfactorily, instead of moving toward a system in another country that does perform satisfactorily we invent our own system based on political dogma that is almost certain to fail?

What if the majority of the public want their tax money to only go into faith schools?

Do you see the flaw in your position?

Well, we had a system that was copied by other countries, and we abolished it in favour of the retarded comprehensive system...

Our comprehensive system is most similar to the excellent Finnish systems with two main differences, ours are part of a centralised structure - the LEA whereas Finnish schools are managed at a municipality level. Secondly our schools have been underfunded for decades, we've only just started to play catch up and now the rug is being pulled from underneath our schools.

I am confident that if it was put to the vote, most people would vote for full separation of state sponsored education and religion.

The majority of the country would probably want the return of capital punishment. Should we do everything according to public opinion?

I am slightly authoritarian - I believe there are some decisions other people are better placed to make on behalf of us, even if it is despite public opinion.

Why does this (and everyone in it support the actions of) state spend fortunes monitoring, preventing and breaking up monopolies on consumer choice, but when it comes down to the provision of education or healthcare, suddenly they are sacred cows and cannot possibly be touched or provided by someone other than the state?

Its easy to turn into a weapon for political clout.

You ruin it in your final years and the next administration has to fix it, if they fail, they are tainted by it and people delightfully forget the previous administration out of pathetic memory loss.

This country is on track for a US bi-partisan system...though maybe it would be better to let a system die than to try and revive a rotting carcase.

We shouldn't do anything based on opinion. What makes yours more valid than someone elses?

It depends what the subject matter was. If there was a subject where I thought my opinion was more valid than someone else's, it'd only be because I'd regard myself relatively as having more experience, greater study and intellect.

On the question of whether or not my opinion is more valid when it comes to deciding that we should let people better placed to form policy as opposed to basing policy on popular opinion in every case, well, because I said so :D
