Hey guys! This might be a bit of a noobish question as the answer might be obvious, but is it worth me swapping my i3 4170 for an older i5 3570k?

I do nothing but game on my current build so if the new CPU would provide better performance I'm down for the swap. It's my brothers old CPU it's sitting around in an old machine so the only thing it would cost me is the time to fit it.

Not really looking to overclock or anything like that. Let me know if you need info on my current set up.

Thanks for the responses in advance :)

Intel Core i3-4170 advantages

  • Single-threaded performance of this processor is better.
  • The microprocessor supports AVX2 and FMA3 instructions. These extensions are not extensively used by applications yet, however their support should improve in future programs.
  • Power consumption of the i3-4170 is lower.

Intel Core i5-3570K advantages

  • In multi-threaded applications, the i5-3570K is 45% faster.
  • Memory performance of the Intel Core i5-3570K CPU is better.
  • The Intel i5-3570K is unlocked. The microprocessor can be effortlessly overclocked on most motherboards to achieve greater performance.

he'd need to give you a mobo with it as they don't run on the same socket

games do use several threads, but most of the time not a huge number. Still, the 3570k is likely to be faster especially when clocked in almost all games. (I'm actually surprised they're claiming better single-thread performance for the i3 as it's slightly lower clocked than the i5 when running just one thread, and the performance per clock is not very different - I'd have thought it'd be pretty much a tie)

Most newer games are.

If it were me, I'd be nabbing the 3570K, and, looking at the post above, the mobo as well! ;)

Aha well luckily it's seated in an old z77 extreme mobo too so I could just take the whole thing out. Just means I'd have too basically refit everything :(

Just grab the whole thing! (Unless it's a really naff case...)

Yeah i would grab it and give it a go, do a few benchmarks now while your using your i3 then do the same benchamarks once ya have it all reinstalled and see if it was worth it :)
