hello

thinking about setting up a web site.

i know nothing about setting one up

are the free ones any good, will people be able to find me if they type in on google gardener in my area or other areas that i cover.

could you guys recommend me any good free ones.

or if there no good, were to go for one i need to pay for

any advice appreciate

thanks

What do you mean by 'free website'? IME these kind of deals are crap. Your site would look very amateurish and have adverts all over the place. The domain would probably also be something like 'yourname.awesomedomainhosts.com'.

We normally recommend TSOHost or VidaHost here to setup the domain and hosting which you would need to pay for. These will require you to setup your website yourself - whether this is as simple as a couple of pages of HTML, or a CMS like WordPress or Joomla, is down to you.

Someone just recommended to me the site www.freelancer.com where you can put in your project and free lancers "bid" on your project. Seems quite good really and if I recall rightly it's where I found my previous web developer who I am still working closely with to this day :)

I would recommend a guy who might be able to help you out but he's relocating this week so will be out of the game for a few weeks!

If you can wait that long though you can always PM me and I will put your details across to him :) He's super friendly!

We'd chuck a design together for you for freeeeee if we could but unfortunately we're bogged riiiiight down and needing all the funds we can for a big charity event we're doing this year! So all our time is in training and dedicating time to our clients who can give us wonga for our event (we're not cheap but that's because what we do is mega ;D)

If we do have some time to help out I will let you know :)

Free website doesn't sound to good.

I could got someone to make the site for me. I do a garden for a guy who does that sort of stuff.

How much do people normally pay for a design.

How much do domains cost. Is it one off or do i need to pay a monthly fee

if i buy a domain something like www.cjgardens.com its probably gone anyway do i add tags like you do on a forum. So if i Google gardener in my area it will come up with my site near the top.

If its not going to be near the top then there.s not much point. I know you can pay Google for it to be on top

i would STRONGLY suggest to read up on basics of how to make a website (domains, hosting) so you understand whats going on, especially on the google searches side of things because some horrible cowboy developers will take you for a ride.

most developers will be good and helpful but some dodgey ones may take advantage of your lack of understanding and cut corners becuase you wont be able to spot thier mistakes. Not trying to sound rude but you are coming across a bit niave at the moment :D

lol no im at my mates house now

i know i have to do a lot of reading up on it because i really dont have a clue about it at all

i understand what your saying stoke1863 same with anything there are cowboys

the guy i know does not maintain them he just does the design of the and the layout. probably would have to do the rest myself

the main thing im bothered about is weather or not that if i do a search in google in going to be near the top

That all depends on the text you write into your website. You need to decide on the keywords you want to appear for. I'd guess 'gardener' and your location. Maybe 'cheap' or 'quality' depending on how you want to sell yourself.

With that in mind, write the pages you want on the site now, and get as many references to those words in as you can - while maintaining good readability obv. It always helps to design a site knowing how much text you've got to work with, and what headings need to be used for good SEO.

*ninja*
It would also be worth noting that a free website on a shared domain would possibly hurt your SEO.

Getting to the top of the search results is a complex topic and depends on your keywords and how competitive they are. Take care on who you take advice from as it can hurt doing the wrong things.

If you are serious about the site then you really should go with your own domain and if you are in the uk then you could do with a .co.uk also putting it on a server in the UK will help.

Subdomains can rank well, again depends on how competitive the keywords are but they don't look as professional as your own domain.

You can do it all yourself but it will take time to learn. Sometimes it's better to pay someone who does know while you concentrate on making money. Depends on your perspective and how you value your time.

Since no one has made it totally clear what you're looking for is "Search Engine Optimisation" (or "SEO" which Spunkey mentioned) for your website.

Having a website and making it rank well in search engines are two very separate things.

Staffy makes a good point that it all depends on the keywords that you want to be found under.

For example, searching for "RoyMi6 Gardening Company, London, England, 123 Fake Street" is always going to display my company as the first result.

However, getting my website to appear first when you search for "Gardener in London" is a whole different ball game.

As others have mentioned this is down to good, up to date content. In the past there used to be a lot of dirty tactics that could be used (and some still can) that would artificially get you to the top. Now the process is much more manual and can take lots of time and effort if you're advertising in a competitive market.

ive made i site (or started) from the link FabienO posted.

it does seem basic which is probably a good starting point for me.

its got a login site were it has a stencil so i can add what i want and the lay out.

not sure yet if it has got SEO yet so yet to start figuring it out.

ill try get the site done over the next few days and then if im allowed to post it on here i would be great full if you could comment on it. help me with any wording or lay out etc

please bear in mind that im dyslexic and i really do struggle with stuff like this as you can probably tell from my wording ha ha

One word of warning don't spam your keyword in your content, it will do you more harm than good.

dont know what you mean by this bit.

ill take a read of that link. thanks mate.

if anyone is looking at getting a site up and does not have a clue like me. this yola that im on is great for beginners

You were "thinking" about doing this 20 hours ago and already you've got business cards made?

Do you not sleep?? :)

Anyway, website is looking good. I'd try and work your header text into your top image to reduce the height of the page.

At the moment your first line of content is below the middle of my screen...

Nija Edit: Oh, and sort out your image on your homepage. It's got a wee cross in the top right like you've just taken a screenshot of something and cropped it wrong.

dont know what you mean by this bit.

A short while ago putting your keyword in to your content as much as possible would give you a boost in the search engine rankings. People were using the keyword 6+ times per 100 words.

Nowadays if you do this it doesn't work. It will make it harder for you to get anywhere near the top of the search engines.
