Why on earth would it be a bad thing that he "doesn't want to risk it" with deadlifts? In my eyes that is far more admirable than trying to push himself too far to impress you.


How very true. Someone who uses a suitable weight is quite a rarity in many circles.

I've rambled, so I'll say it simply. Machines can be dangerous if they force you to carry out a resistance excersise that goes against a good bio-mechanical position. They can also limit the development of stabilising muscles.
But used to fully overload larger muscle groups, they can be effective and gaining mass you might otherwise not achieve. They are also excellent as an introduction to weight bearing excercise, and can help you keep good form when performing high rep circuits.

All very true.
However most gyms that i see these days are moving to the Hammer style of equipment, which use a more natural motion compared to the older style which was strict to 1 plane.

no the guy would deadlift over 160 im sure. Its just plain psychological. If you dont lift raw you dont believe in your ability.

I understand what you are saying, but why was he 10kg behind you on biceps and unable to do dips? Presumably he wasn't using a machine for biceps (or was he). As regards the dips wasn't it because he didn't dip or in all exercises, because he relied on machines-he just didn't have the energy?
Yes he was using a preacher curl machine. Leverage type. he does machine dips too but is capable of dipping. That was more an observation.

Say what you like but there are many studies villifying the testosterone enhancing effects and benefits of technical lifting and you DO NOT get that using machines.
