Anyone know if I can upgrade the HDD in my 400gb Freecom network drive?
It works brilliantly, but I am running out of space. I'm not sure if the FTP/SMB info is on the drive or on flash memory on the enclosure.

edit - why can't I ever get the spelling in the title right? :(

I dont see why not. I have a classic 160GB one I opened up and they're just a glorified HDD caddy inside with same molex and IDE/SATA circuit board. I suspect a network version would be the same.

It won't be on the drive, they're just bog standard drives. There will be a EPROM somewhere with the code on it. One thing though - the drive may be formatted in a particular way, so pull it out and connect it direct to the PC and look at what's on it. Do that before buying a new drive...

Yep, just had a look. the FTP/NAS side of it is on a board within the enclosure. The drive is a 400Gb Hitachi Deskstar SATA drive.

Would I be ok replacing this with a 1TB Samsung drive? The hitachi is formatted at FAT32, so this is what I'd need to do on the new drive. Does FAT32 cope with 1TB drives?
