Hey,

Just wondering how F2S users have been getting along since the Pipex takeover... how bad has the throttling been, any problems with Usenet or other services etc.?

Also are the LLU problems sorted out now, and is it a reliable service?

Discuss :D

Cheers,

Suman

I haven't really noticed any problems, but then again I'm a fairly light user.

My pings seem to have settled back to what they were before upgrading to Max, my DL rates are fine when I need to download stuff (such as Linux distros, drivers, patches etc)

Not on LLU though so can't really comment on that.

I use F2s for my work internet, on all day, loads of emails. Firstly, I haven't noticed any performance or service problems.

Secondly, I never even knew they had been taken over. :p

On IPStream here - two connections, one Max and one 2Mb. Both are reliable, speeds are fairly consistent.

I believe there was a short period (before I joined) where the shaping caused havoc to a few people. They've ironed out the problems and moved to a new network (apparently).

With the new 50Gb capped packages, I can't see traffic shaping ever having too much of an impact (unlike Plusnet and the likes).

IPstream stuff is stable in terms of speed, if you have any problems it will either be a fault on the line or exchange contention. Easynet LLU has been ironed out by stopping selling it :D and LLU speeds are fine now. They will soon be selling pipex LLU as well as BT max.

Traffic shaping is on usenet stuff, shouldn't be too noticeable though as it's only there so as not to max out the pipes.

As a side note they are moving to the nildram offices and making me redundant in the process :(

Zap: Bummer about the redundancy dude :( hope you move on to bigger and better though :D does this mean F2S and Nildram support will merge? I hope this conglomerate thing doesn't go too far... don't wanna see F2S & Nildram go the same way as Pipex!

I've been on F2S 2MB IPStream since last September and the service has been pretty good (aside the shortcomings of my crappy line!). Not noticed the effects of traffic shaping at all, and my torrent speeds and gaming pings are good. I think I'll be sticking to IPStream though... moving to Max will probably net me a lower speed than I am getting now (plus a cap) as I somehow magically get a pretty reliable 2MB with 9dB/63dB

Reason I started this thread was for my parents really... they are on Pipex Solo 1000 (uncapped £24pm). Due to it being pricey and the deterioration of their service, I was thinking of moving them over to F2S Cascade Plus (5 to 8MB, £24pm, 50Gb cap). They won't get anywhere near the 50Gb cap, and they have pretty good line stats so I reckon they'll get close to 8MB. But I was just concerned if F2S are gonna go the way of Pipex, would this be like jumping out of the frying pan and in to the fire?

Cheers,

Suman

Thanks guys, i'm sure i'll find something :)

i would have thought you could go for a cheaper option if they don't use close to 50gb a month? All the products f2s sell are up to 8mb but the bandwidth varies.

I'm on the new MAX service and although the line speed hasn't ramped up yet it seems fine. My gut feeling is that there is some throttling on P2P, adding encryption to the mix seems to sort that out though.

I can't really understand why I'm not allowed my 20GB a month at full speed however?

Just for the future really as it's only £4pm more and seems like a good idea with streaming video and VoIP coming into the mainstream. Don't want them to constantly worry about bandwidth! And when I come to town on the weekend and pwn their leet 8MB line

More worried about future restrictions from Pipex leaning on them though :(

we're on their max service with a 50gb cap - speeds arent very impressive. supposed to be running at 6mb and never get more than 400k/sec and usenet performance is dire, 190k/sec max

:(

edit - just checked and its 7mb down now :D but still seems slow as hell - are other people having problems? is this just the period where any problems etc are ironed out and everything will speed up soon? the only reason i want 8mb is for usenet :(

You probably haven't had Max for the full 10 days (at a guess!), so the BRAS profile possibly hasn't caught up with the sync rate yet. So possibly reserve judgement till the training period has ended.

Also, remember that F2S's service is contended (and shaped!), so the chances of getting solid 8Mb performance on Usenet 24/7 isn't going to happen - and that's true of most providers. At busy times, contention is going to show up much more than it did when everyone was on 2Mb.

Dude if all you wanna do is leech you picked the wrong ISP... traffic shaping and the usage caps are what I hope will keep the service good at F2S.

correction - my dad chose the wrong isp :D

as long as i can get 500k/sec i will be happy

im the 8mb/s llu

they have definately started shaping though. I use usenet, with 8 threads open i get 120kb/s only. Lucky i can use as many as i want with my news supplier, but for bit torrent people you'll be stumped unless you can encyrpt.

The service is excellent, always has been. I've not noticed any changes in speeds or service on either the home or business packages we use in various homes/office sites around the country.

Yeah, I've noticed a real change in downloading from newsgroups, pretty poor now. Plus I'm pretty no swearing about them changing the conditions of my current service, It was stated that once 8 meg was available that I would be upgraded and now I have to change to a new service they offer, paying for the privilidge and incurring a cap in the process.

I'm trying to get off the F2S LLU service but since every company is doing 8mb LLU I can't migrate :( And F2s won't reply to my request of migrating to their IPstream so I can get a MAC that lets me go anywhere.

Aphex: what's so bad about their LLU service that makes you want to move (I heard they had a lot of teething issues with it!)? Try posting over at the Freedom2Support forums as the lads over there are quite helpful :)
