Hey All,

Just a quick question about freelance & money!

I have just finished my third freelance website, and I'm just writting up an invoice for it...

Website
Template Design - £150
Developement - £200 (Up to 10 pages + contact us form)

Admin Section
Template Design - £50
Developement - £150 (Up to 3 management sections)

Total - £550

Now, I feel like that's a decent price for a website, however my friend thinks its too much. The website is written in C# asp.net2. The admin section includes a course manager, news manager, and a user manager.

I also work for a webdesign company (this is just a bit of money on the side) and they would charge somewhere in the region of £2500 - £3000 for this site.

What do you guys think?

cheers in advance :)

I do a little bit of .Net guvvy work too and the price you have quoted sounds very reasonable for the amount of work you have put in, however do you not agree a price before hand?

Too expensive? No chance, if anything you're selling yourself short, the company I work for would quote the same as the company you do.

Well the client has a small business, but when I quoted her for a site I told her it would be in the region of £300 - £350 for a static site, and £500 - £600 for a dynamic site, and she didn't complain.

The site has been a bit of a pain to get finished tho, with her always changing her mind on what pages she wants, and what the site should look like.

The site has taken months when it could have been completed in weeks.

Well, if its taken you months then it deserves at least a few months of pay to match. £550 sounds low for a few months of work, but if your happy with the cash / and you haven't already told her the cost, then I'd chuck another hundred or so on top.

Yea, but not a fixed price, and like most sites I work on, they always take longer than planned!

This is the first site I have ever done for someone that isn't a family friend, before I would have only charge them like £200 for a site.

I have only been working on it a couple hour a night for a couple of nights a week, so it's not like i have spend all that much time on it, but a couple of months without getting paid for something isn't good! And it wasn't my fault its taken sooooo long! clients ... :p

Set up a pay structure for the future so that you dont have this problem again, and then add on the bottom any changes to the agreed site that come after building has commenced will incur a charge of £x per change.

As you have told the client the cost of the site you should add extra because of the unforseen changes. However, if you have only just started out, do the changes for free as at the moment you cant do with any negative feedback.

Well, I was going to do a fixed payment structure this time, but she wanted the site fast, but then failed to send me the content for the site, by the time I got the content, it was full of spelling mistakes, and wasn't right, which she didn't tell me for about a month, meaning I had to go in and find all the spelling mistakes!

I will do all small changes for free anyways (for now) :)

Oh yea, did I mention i'm hosting the site for free too! another bargain! ;)
