Lets say I've done some freelance work....nothing major. It would have been during periods where I would have been earning under the tax threshold and there were no major amounts of money.

Should I have declared this legally?

You should have registered for self-assessment within a month of taking on the first job, and filled in a tax return.

Interesting, the lad in question is 18, was still in school whilst the jobs were completed. One recently, and one when he was 15. He didn't have a job at either time and the total was about £300.

What sort of fine is he likely to expect?

How can someone get caught out by doing this with only small income? Just curious, is it from the companies side once they had paid?

I'd also be interested to know this, as I've taken a fair bit of freelance design work this year whilst between jobs.
