It's an awesome game, especially if you can find a good stable multiplayer server. I used to play online on Jolt uk ages back. Get the rebalance mod and single player will be awesome

I'd rather get 'X2: The threat' brand new off of Amazon. From the same time (so similar computer requirements) and the ability to purchase fleets, Capital Ships and Carriers, and your own space stations makes it much better than Freelancer (although harder to get into as less arcadey).
However if your computer can handle it just get X3
