Freelancers

I know there's a few freelance photographers and whatnot kicking around, just after some words of wisdom as I'm struggling to get any work contacting companies looking to outsource overflow and so forth.

Do you work solely freelance or just bits and bobs on the side of your day job? Chosen and most effective methods of advertising? Word of mouth, website, local ads and so on... Are you contacted by or do you contact agencies, private individuals, small businesses?

I tend to get up ~5am and find a nice comfy bush just up from the local primary school, then it's simply a case of waiting until 9:15ish and snapping away. There is an excellent market for these pictures if you know where to look! There are obviously other benefits aswell.

P.s, it might be worth asking in the photography section.

Wasn't specifically for photography, just after some ideas and influences in general.

Just trying to pick up some sideline work and I've somewhat exhausted my current methods.

I did - and still do - lots of free writing work. It helps get your name out there, gives you practice at whatever your art is and can become part of a portfolio. Also, you never know whether that new web site or magazine will hit the big time.

Only if I have time, of course.

I work Freelance, generally working for a few weeks then being taken on longer contracts. I'm currently working on a 12 month project, last job was a 4 month project. I look online for work (motionographer, CreativePool), get in contact with companies myself to see if they need freelancers (am on a few books) and I try to get work through agencies though I havn't had a design orientated job through one yet. Most work I find myself.

I've been doing a bit of freelancing as a result of my work placement, so for me word of mouth through contacts, and keeping on the radars of people has helped me.
