Just got hold of a cheap atom setup from a mate who was skint. He had XP on it but I want to use it mainly for backing up my main pc and the odd torrent and nzb.

Does FreeNAS support both downloading and uploading of torrents and can you get nzb's using it? I know that you can do these things with QNAP NAS's but not sure about FreeNAS.

Cheers.

Yes and yes. FreeNAS includes the Transmission bittorrent client and it'll run SABnzbd. Takes a bit of setting up though.

This is the process I followed to get sabnzbd running, but there's a lot more info in that thread, including other guides.

Transmission isn't very well documented and permissions can be a struggle. One thing that isn't made clear is you'll also need to configure a download and a configuration directory. I just chown Transmission and chmod 770 them, then make sure the local user I use to access shares is in the Transmission group.

That's some basic stuff, but there's loads more to it and lots of fun and games to be had getting everything running how you want it :D
