Hey,

has anyone used FreeNas or similar?

we have a number of old amd x2 and p4 machine lying about and i am thinking of setting up a freenas box, x2 + 2x250gb spinpoints (raid for security) (reused form an old machine). run the os off of a pen drive ...

any comments? othere software that is similar that you would reccomend over Freenas

the OS is based on monowall and is pretty happy on anything you choose to install it on. Bad things, it likes to be the host OS on the machine and doesn't like being run in a VM much. Good things, it's free it does things like iSCSI and other useful stuff and it's got a nice web interface. best thing to do is try it, it's free afterall.

For running off a minimal install medium, freenas is probably the way to go. If you've got a bit more space spare (3GB or so) take a look at openfiler as well - linux based and supports a couple more useful things, like online raid expansion.
