if not whats the best way to go about it ? thanks again

p.s. ino this is my 3rd post tonight just getting in to all this tv and hd stuff as just earning enouth money to do it so have a lot of questions :)

From an Avforums FAQ thread:

Q. I already have a Sky dish, can I use it for Freesat?

A. Yes, they use the same satellites and you do not need to move the dish.

Q. Will I need to add a new cable for Freesat or can I just use the existing Sky cable?

A. You can just swap the existing coax cable from the old Sky box to the new Freesat one.

Q. I have Sky+ will I be able to simply remove the Sky+ box and install a Freesat PVR when they are available?

A. Yes.

Q. I have a Sky quad LNB with spare connections, can I simply use one of these connections and route a new cable to a Freesat box?

A. Yes.

You just connect a cable from unused LNB output from the dish, route it around your house through the wall into a freesat/sky box.

Subject to you having either a dual LNB and your folks only using 1 socket and not 2 for Sky+, or a Quad LNB leaving you with 2 sockets free to attach a cable. If you don't have a spare socket then you really need to fit a new LNB ideally with room for expansion.

If you can get some without too much fuss, Belden 75ohm cable is very good and is what Sky engineers (monkeys) use, or at least used to use before they got cheap and started fitting the skinny paired stuff in with new installs. You can get the bnc ends from a ton of places, one being a certain electronics store and another being B&Q.

thanks slam62 i figure itd be coax might be able to get some of that free then just this lnb is there a easy way to tell if u got space parent only got normal sky but they may be changing to bt vision soon as we get it free cos me bad works for bt

this means sky will be disconected and i can use the coax from that or shall i run 2 down ready for pvr ?

ok the lnb i got has only got 2 connections will a freesat work on one connection till mum and dad decide to ditch sky ?

any free connection should work, sounds like all you need is a cable.

I use a dvb-s2 card (£70ish) and watch 'freesat' on the pc with dvbviewer. Freesat is only the epg and imo hd boxs are overpriced at the moment. HD content is limited although the olympics are in hd if you like that.

We have two x freesat from skys, a fixed EPG/channel list is annoying (channel skipping) so you have to skip through each channel one by one if you're a channel hopper. Also no HD channels. But I think you do get a few more channels than freesat (sky three, channel 4 channel 5)

wouldn't mind DAVE looks decent progs, but not on sky. Is it available on freeview DTV? Annoying that freesat has a couple of HD free to air channels, sky doesn't. Might change later one? (would need a new box) Got the SD Amstrad package, text shimmers which is a bit ugly. SCART RGB output.

freesat from sky £20 viewing card +sky box of some sort

Freesat using a freesat box no chan 5 or dave and a few others but 5 at least on the way.

If you just want sd then freesat from sky £75 pay once watch for ever includes a dish and box - no hd though.
