Freesat on LG TV not working

Hi all,

I’ve recently cancelled Sky Q so thought I’d give the built in freesat on the LG OLEDB6V a go.

I attached one of the cables from the Sky dish to the TV and tuned in the channels. It found 151 channels and the EPG works fine but when selecting a channel I just get an ‘invalid service’ message.

Has anybody come across this before? Any fixes that I can try?

Thanks

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be alone soon but if you're using a cable that was plugged in to the Sky Q won't that be a Wide Band LNB that the LG won't be compatible with? I've not sure as I'm not sure it would pick up anything or just work on part of the band or with one polarisation?

From a quick look, it looks like your TV only has a single satellite input (in which case this will be a standard satellite feed rather than a wideband - as a Sky Q (wideband) LNB requires both satellite feeds to be connected).

Your options are either to have the LNB changed back to a conventional quad LNB, or look at one of the new Freesat boxes that are drop in replacements for the SkyQ box and fully support the wideband LNB)

Ah thanks guys! Didn’t think it would be as simple as attaching the cable!

I’ll go and grab a cheap freesat box today and see if that works.

Unfortunately a "cheap" (presuming used) box won't help either - it specifically has to be the latest Freesat boxes as pictured here:

Annoying! So assuming something like this won't work?

No that one will only work with older LNB's, same as your TV. The cheapest product that would work is:

If your confident with a ladder, it's just a case of changing the LNB (the bit on the end of the dish) for an "older" standard one that will work with your TV e.g.

I looked into changing the LNB but thought a box would be easier. Would the LNB you've posted above still work with Sky Q? I assume I would need to swap the cables back or fit an extra cable for the freesat?

The LNB above won't work with SkyQ, it's purely for the old SkyHD and older Freesat boxes like the one you linked.

The old style LNB's basically 1 output can feed 1 tuner, to watch/record 1 channel at a time, so e.g. Sky+/HD used two outputs so you could watch 1 thing and record another.

The latest LNB's output a wideband signal with half of the signal on 1 cable, and the other half on a 2nd cable. The benefit being that all of the channels are available at the same time through only 2 cables, so it's just up to the box manufacturer to include enough tuners to watch/record as many concurrent channels as required (e.g. 8 Tuners in a SkyQ box, 4 in the latest Freesat 4K Recorder).

There are hybrid tuners available (i.e. that have 2 SkyQ/Wideband outputs, and some legacy outputs), however they can be hit or miss, in that some of them would only work in SkyQ/Wideband mode with an actual SkyQ box, and wouldn't work with the latest freesat box).

If you changed your current Wideband LNB to the "old" Quad LNB above, you'd keep your 2 cables, but only use 1 of them for your TV. (The 2nd cable could be used for a TV in another room with an extension cable, or you'd use both cables with e.g. an older Freesat Recorder e.g. one of the Humax models than can be picked up used from the highstreet second hand store)

If you later resigned up for SkyQ, they normally send an engineer out to check your dish and would change the LNB back to a SkyQ (or maybe a hybrid if you asked) free of charge.

Why is everyone bashing their head against a brick wall to get the message in to your skull, and why is it important that anything new still works with SkyQ? Your OP says you've cancelled SkyQ.

Your options are pretty simple. This isn't difficult stuff to understand matey.

  • New style SkyQ LNB + old style satellite TV receiver = No blooming picture - i.e. It don't work, mucca

  • New style SkyQ LNB + cheap (old style) satellite TV receiver = No blooming picture - i.e. It still don't work, mucca

  • New style SkyQ LNB + New style satellite TV receiver = It works, but you spent a sh... a tonne of money on a new 4K Freesat box

  • Change to old style Quad LNB = Your LG TV now works

  • Change to old style Quad LNB = any cheap Freesat receiver will work

If for some bizarre reason you want to keep the LNB so it will still work with the SkyQ that you cancelled then your options are either the expensive 4K Freesat box or changing the Q LNB to a hybrid (2x Q outputs, 4x legacy outputs).

I fully understand what people are telling me but god forbid I know nothing about LNBs and I ask a simple question. People have kindly answered these questions and explained the difference to me. I don't see anybody bashing their head against a wall.

My reasons for wanting to keep Sky Q working are pretty obvious but quite frankly nothing to do with you at the same time!

They explained, and very completely. But it looks like you didn't bother to read. @Fluffybob was in exactly the same boat as you. His explanation nailed it, and yet somehow you still went off in the wrong direction with "I'll buy a cheap Freesat box". You said you fully undertstand, but the evidence in your replies suggests otherwise, hence bashing heads against walls. @Armageus has given you a lot of time in typing out some great advice too which fills in some of the technical background why certain products do or don't work with others. Despite what you might think, I'm not here to bash you. But I will point out that folk are wasting their time if you're not prepared to read their responses.

Yes, you don't know about LNBs. That's why you're here asking questions. So take your time and read the answers. Ask more questions to check your understanding. We're here to help, but we can't do that if it appears that you're not willing to listen. 'Measure twice and cut once' instead of 'Ready Fire Aim'. :D

You say your reasons for wanting to keep SkyQ working (presumably after cancellation) are obvious. I wonder though, are you expecting that the box(es) will still work and you'll be able to playback any recordings? If so, then you're in for a bit of a shock.

The Q gear is only on loan to you for as long as you maintain an active subscription. Once out of contract then you won't be able to watch stuff via them. Here's more info from the Sky forum LINK

I really don’t get what you’re getting at. Fluffybob said he had to get a ‘new freesat box’ which I interpreted as just needing to go and get a new box (cheap as I don’t need recording etc)!

Absolutely nobody wasted their time, I read all of the responses and knew exactly what I needed to get before you decided to chirp up!

Sky is already cancelled and box sent back…so no need to ‘educate me’ on that either.

I’m moving into my new house soon and I’m keeping my current house as a BTL so I don’t want to cause any hassle for any future tenants in case they want to get Sky Q etc. Is that a good enough reason for you? But…before you come back with another smart response I also read the reply that stated Sky would replace the LNB if anybody was to sign up.
