Just got a sat dish for free sat yesterday.I have fitted it to the chimney, locked onto the satellite(after trying for about 30 mins found out i was trying for wrong satellite:o) ,tuned in channels etc.
Now sat power appears to be 100% but sat quality only gets to about 60-75% on best channel
Pics look fine though
Never had much to do with sat TV before.is this normal/acceptable?i.e.What quality should i get ?:)

Details of gear below

Panasonic 42" plasma with free sat built in
80 cm dish
quad lnb (tried 2 diff outputs,no change in quality)
cable has copper shielding 25m run(not running by or with AC cables)
No trees in LOS
used a signal meter to set dish(only a cheep one though)
S.Wales area
Any comments gratefully received,Want to make sure i haven't done anything major wrong before i take the ladders down:)

Really dont know enough about this to comment, but my freeview signal rarely gets much over 70% and I don't have any problems.

One possible issue could be the weather? If it's fairly cloudy etc. at the moment then maybe 60-75% isn't too bad, but if it's clear today then what will your signal drop to when the weather goes off?

Sure someone will come along who knows what they're on about soon :)

Thanks for the comments guys
We are currently running the cables under the floorboards .Will try realigning the dish maybe later today or tomorrow and post back :)

I wouldn't worry about it. Our sat signal used to be the same, never caused a problem.

Cheers :)
Just finished hiding cables and attaching the network cable to tv(for quicker TV guides apparently)
Realigned the dish did not seem to make much difference to the signal quality though, but picture looks fine

When you're dealing with digital satellite the picture either works or it doesn't. There's no inbetween like with analogue. And clouds do effect the signal level, as water is a big attenuator of microwaves.

Take a look at this site for an idea of some of the other satellites you could receive (equipment depending) - http://www.lyngsat.com/ (anything between 45E and 45W really).

Only just got `into` sat this last few weeks and only cos dad got hiself a tv that had a sat tuner(freesat)built in
Am i correct in thinking that `only` freesat program mes can be received?
and to get anything else he needs a separate receiver capable of getting other channels?or whatever they are called(cos it is a fixed dish pointing at Astra 2 sattelite)

It depends on how the TV has been put together, the Sky DigiBoxes are locked to only work with the normal satellite, it may be that the freesat kit allows you to point it elsewhere and it will happily scan and pick up the channels.

Any normal DVB-S receiver will pick up from any satellite.

Yeah you will need to buy a stand alone digital satellite receiver and a motor for your dish if you want to watch channels from other satellites. You'll find a lot of the good channels will be encrypted but there are workarounds on the net if you research it further.

Although take this satellite for example, only a few degrees west of Sky UK, but on it there's a channel called Dubai One which shows a lot of American shows for free.

More than anything it's a bit of fun seeing whats around.
