Currently have two sky+hd boxes.
I did want to get rid of TV totally and just do on demand but flat mates think that's mad.

So what is a decent but cheapish box that also does recording and Netflix, do any do Netflix?

I'm assuming all cabling is fine?
Would dish need realigning?
 
TBH, I'm not sure if there is much of a range of Freesat+ PVRs with Netflix built-in. My gut feeling is that with something as fundamental as a TV recorder you should concentrate on getting a recorder that does it's job well rather than settling for a second-tier product simply because it includes Netflix.

Humax would be the brand of choice. Check out their web site. They also have refurb deals if you are very tight on budget.

There are better, stand-alone, solutions for Netflix. The Roku boxes and the Android MX TV boxes all include Netflix. These are available from £40~£80

I am currently installing Android MX boxes for several clients. Netflix is a feature. So too is XBMC, so that's your home stored movies, videos, pictures and music all catered for. Plus, with a little bit of fettling ;) , you get free movies, sports, BBC iPlayer and lots of other goodies too. My son and I watched the F1 motor racing film Rush in 720pHD this afternoon, then he watched a rerun of the Man City v Liverpool match in HD from Boxing Day that was originally shown on BT Sport 1HD.

Satellite dish alignment: No change required. Just hook up the dish feeds from the old box on to the new recorder and that's it.
 
I've just bought a Humax 1000s cheap (customer return / open box and staff discount, got it for 120quid) and it really is quite good. Planner could be a bit quicker. Built in iPlayer etc is a nice touch.
 
I had a Humax box and it was very good for what it was, sold it shortly after buying it though as I much preferred the content on Sky.

You noticed the improvements with the new update?
 
If you have sky hd, and have had it more than twelve months, then do you not own the boxes?
If so give sky a ring, get a freeat from sky card from them, stick it in the box and job done.
No bills, no monthlies, and all of freesat sorted.

Eitherr ay th dish does not need realigning.

Look up freesat from sky.

Which is rubbish. But hopefully make a bit of money back.

such a shame Netflix isn't on freest boxs. I already have Xbox which Netflix is in, how I currently watch it. But less boxes the better.

Where's the customer return ones? Can't see anything on the site.

I have a HDR-1000s for Freesat and have since they were new. The firmware was frankly bad when they first came out, but it's a lot better after many updates. The main on demand services work now, plus there's a Youtube app that you can control from tablet/phone etc. which is excellent. The update last week has added support for an iOS (and later Android) app that will be available this month to manage recordings, guide etc., which is a really welcomed addition.

In terms of missing channels, I don't at all. It's also great to get HD for free on the main channels. I don't usually even use the box for live TV, I just set to record and watch later or use on demand and it's great. If you like your sport though, you'll miss the Sky Sports channels. If not, no problem. I'd just try to keep track of whether you watch the non-Freesat channels and make a judgement call.

The only thing missing in my opinion is Netflix, so I use a Super Slim PS3 for that (and a bit of GTA5/GT5 of course).

If you already have the PS3, or even if you don't, you'll be saving quite a bit of money by this time next year I would have thought though. Do the maths - it'll probably affect the decision quite a lot!
 
Been very impressed with Freesat on a Humax HDR-1000. If you've already got Sky+ then you'll have a twin LNB setup already allowing you to watch one channel and another channel at the same time, regardless of which two channels they are.
 
The only sport ill miss is f1 although BBC do show all races, just not live.

With sky to me, you either go with everything or nothing, as the cheaper tires just add rubbish channels.

And I want to cut my monthly cost, sky is back up to £110 so would save that minus what ever an internet connection would cost me and lovefilm sunpbscription.

As I said already have an Xbox for Netflix, in fact the Blu-ray player might even do Netflix but it hasn't even been connected to the TV for ages.
 
Those F1 races that aren't on BBC I've been using Now TV for. There's a PS3 app, it'll cost about a tenner per race though. Hoping it'll be cheaper next season if you can pay per race rather than 24hr pass. I'm still saving a lot on sky though.

Hi there I'm really interested in these android boxes youa are talking about and the ;) free stuff care to explain. Are they easy to set up.

just bought an 8 way LNB and I'm dying to add to my Humax and Sky boxes.

(I think one more week and the wife will be convinced to ditch sky) we already get all irish channels on demand and with US netflix have more than we can watch for Box sets.

Hate paying 28€ a month for E! and the odd dancing on ice (available on demand anyway)

The MX Android TV boxes are all over Ebay. The basics are done for you. Adding extra channels isn't that complicated but there is a learning curve. I leave it to my clients to decide whether they want the basic box for £60 with XBMC and go do their investigation, or whether they want one fully configured for £90 so it's fit and forget.
 
Digging this back up.

What's a cheap box I can record on, as much as I would like on demand/youtube I can use Xbox for that.

Is Humax FOXSAT-HDR or Samsung SMT-S7800 ok anything else? Seems to be reasonably cheap on eBay, something around the £50 mark would be great if possible, can always upgrade latter. I take it any box will be plug and play.

Testing nowtv for a few premium channels atm.
