I am at my sisters house using sky +

I am very impressed.

we have freeview at home..is there such a thing as a freeview + box? would be great if there is!!

Also... if recording TWO programs on sky plus can you pause the one you are watching without messing up the recording?

Cheers,

G

You can get freeview boxes with hard drives for recording :) Only place I know is on a competitors site though, so you'll have to search yourself.

Personally I'm more impressed with Virgins on demand than with Sky's recording... on demand has to be the future of TV :D

I believe there is something called "Freeview Playback" which pretty much offers all the benefits of Sky+.

With Sky+ you only have 2 decoders so the total number of channels you can have at one time is two. So you could watch 1 and record 1 or record 2. You cannot record 2 and watch another. However if the one you are watching is one of the ones you are recording then yes, you can pause, rewind restart it as much as you like. When Heroes was on SciFi we tended to start watching it 15 minutes after it started so we could fast forward the adverts and still go to bed when it finished.

Yep... Once you've used a PVR for a while, it would certainly be difficult to go back to "normal" TV. Best thing since sliced bread (unless they go wrong of course).

man that looks awesome!

But £200 puts it firmly out of our price range for now atleast I'd say.

Our pram cost that much!

Will mention it to the Mrs, but I think we will have to wait till they are cheaper. Still great to know it's an option when we can afford it :D

+2

Had SKy+ before this and the Humax beats its it in most respects, apart from Series link, which freeview doesnt have yet.

Told the gf this as a selling point and her response was...

"why?"

Same question from me :p

How can it be better than sky +?

Basically PVR boxes have a tuner splitter built into them, enabling them to record one channel while you watch another.

With Sky, you need to pay extra for Sky+ - I believe this covers for the costs for having two connections to your Sky dish, rather than just one. I also believe you have two wires feeding into the Sky+ box, so you'd also have more wires.

Maybe Sky+ boxes have built in splitters now - but you'd still need to pay Sky extra (£10?) a month.

Personally, I'd go for freeview over Sky anyday - purely out of principle, if nothing else.

sky + is free now iirc.

though i personally like virgins on demand except for 1: does anyone else find the v+ box slow to change channels? 2. virgin central is pap, if you want to make it realy good then don't drip feed the episodes 6 at a time or whatever, put the whole series on so i can select whatever episode i want whenever i want, obviously new tv series i can see why not but it still annoys me.

1. Yeah, it's annoying. Quicker to use the mini-guide to see what's on and change channels. Doesn't help when flicking (or, in the case of the V+, trudging) through music channels. But the three tuners makes up for it... I've lost count of the times I've been recording two channels and watching a third.

2. VC has always been a mystery. But not as much of a mystery as VC2, which is exactly the same as VC! The only reason I can think the channels exist is to give people on the M and L packages a taster of video on demand so they pay the subscription to get TV Choice on demand, or upgrade to the XL package.

I bought one for my parents a few months back - the general consensus is that either Topfield (more expensive, but can be customised with modules) or Humax are the best two brands.

I use a TV Card and stream recorded stuff to my xbox, but that's another story :D.

Indeed Sky+ is a free service now - so as long as you're a Sky customer and have the box it doesn't cost any monthly fee.
The box is only £99 brand new or around half that if you go for a refurb or second hand.
Most have 160GB (80GB usable) HD's for around 40hrs of recording.
I have upgraded mine with a 250GB (170GB usable) for around 85hrs recording.

I love Sky+ to bits.
I have my Sky subscription because of Sky 1 mainly - I don't have any of the premium channels.
Sky+ just makes the whole Sky experience 100x better.
