Freeware Virus Scanner - recommendations please

I'm looking for a freeware virus scanner for window xp. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Go for Avast, I've been using it for 3/4 years now.

avg and avast both have anti virus and anti spyware.

i think its just a matter of opinion which 1 is better. according to the stats avg, has been downloaded the most.
