Just building my new rig and have fitted the Freezer 64 Pro to the CPU. As it's a very tight fitting, quite a bit of thr thermal paste has been squeezed out of the space betweeen the CPU and heatsink. Is this OK or should I wipe off the excess. If wipe, what should I use?

Your experience appreciated....

The best way to apply paste is to use a bit clingfilm on the end of your finger, then you can get a very even coating of the paste.

Remember,the thinner the layer,the better !

does anyone use the grain of rice sized blob of paste and the the pressure of the heastink to spread it? My temps are ok with that method.. never tried to apply it with cling film (on a cpu).. is that method any better then the grain of rice.. might be up for giving that a try

I use a grain of rice sized blob, but i use my finger and the clingfilm method to spread it, never trusted the pressure method, personal preference i guess.
My mate has just bought some thermal paste from germany, well its not really paste, its silver and runny, its a bit like mercury, came in a syringe and can be sucked back up if you put too much on.

Has anyone come across this?

Yes, it eats aluminium for breakfast.

There was an thered about it not too long ago. An guy had put it on his Zalman cooler some spilled onto the aluminum he tries to wash it off with water and it just falls apart under the tap :s

I think you'll find the whole grain of rice thing was for when Athlon XP's had no heat spreaders. Now everything has a heat spreader and so you need the clingfilm or credit card trick. All the AC stuff nowadays comes with a thermal pad on it and there does seem to be a little too much, but it doesn't seem to massively affect the cooling capability.
