Literally hundreds of pounds worth of food in two massive freezers in the garage has defrosted!!

What should we do?

Can we eat any of it?

One of my malco brothers left the door open last night, everything is still cold but 100% defrosted.

On a lot of the stuff it says not to refreeze it :(

Stuff thats in there:

LOADS of chicken breasts

HUNDREDS of sausages

10+ Pizza's

Fish Fingers

Chips

Hagen Daaaaaazz Ice cream :(

Pork Steaks

Veg, corn n peas etc

All the usual stuff people keep frozen, loads of food basically :(

Our parents are away on holiday and they fully stocked up before they went. Will it make us sick if we refreeze it?

This has happened before and they just claimed on the house insurance for all the food that went in the bin. But they where here to replace it all at that time. This time we are on our own with a shed load of food and no money to replace it :/

Any idea what we should do? if anythink will still be good to eat?

/edited dont think it had anything to do with the power, think it was human error

Cheers,

G

Invite us all round.. Im sure we could finish it off quick enough.

On a more serious note I probably wouldnt refreeze it though.
Tough situation.

cook up all meat and refreeze, if most is still very cold it can be refrozen inc meat. pizza etc will keep in fridge for 4or 5 days before need eating. Give some to the neighbours to cook and eat. No money??? how old are you?at home alone?! tsk tsk ;)

Didn't your parents leave you with any money in case of emergencies? Don't you have a current bank account or something?

I wouldn't refreeze it personally.

lolz owned....

Pizza, Indian, Chinese, Fish and Chips.

Seriously you shouldn't really refreeze it but cook as much as you can and eat it cold for the next 2-3 days.

If you have any pets dogs or cats its party time for them !

shame to waste that nice ice cream,

If you live anywhere near me im more than happy to come round and help you eat it.
OR you could open up a hotdog stand outside your house for 2 days and recoup some of the losss

Personally, i'd probably refrost everything except for meat products. Unless they have been pre-cooked. Just check what they say on each item, some things say do not refreeze once defrosted, others dont say anything. :( gutted though! just go on a binge session with a few mates, good excuse to get the beers in!

I would say anything veg and pizzas are good to re-freeze.

Providing they are fridge cold you should be able to cook everything else and then freeze it. Some one step in and tell me if I'm wrong here, but that sounds sensible to me.

It is unusual for a freezer to defrost everything overnight.

If the power is off and the lid /door unopened it should still be frozen 24 hours later

Exactly. If your power goes off keep the fridge and freezer door shut and unless it's off for over a day you should be fine.

In your situation I'd get cooking whatever you can, and put meat in the fridge where it'll probably be fine for a couple of days.

Oh noes....

Does home insurance cover this sort of thing? If so, chuck it out and buy some more.
If not, start eating, invite the whole street round :p ....and me of course! :)

Invite your friends and start a food party! :p

But this begs the question, why would you want to stock up so much foods and then, having no money in the end?

Lay all the food out on the floor of somewhere like a garage or back garden and take picture records of everything that has defrosted, make an inventory as well if you can.

But as mentioned above, cook everything that you can, its the only way itll be any use, after its cooked it can be refreezed or just put it in the fridge.

Get cooking as best as you can with your 1 (working) arm :p Doesn't sound like an easy task!

Definately get some chums around asap (Sat?!) and have a big eat-off.

Shame it isn't really BBQ weather anymore!

righty... get down to wilcos and buy some big tuppaware tubs (Not too big you cant fit in the fridge though). Then make sure that you wash them and dry them out. Then get cooking. Put a couple of layers of kitchen roll in each of the tubs and make sure you seperate all the meat (ie chicken, bacon, sausages etc) Make sure that its all thoroughly cooked then put it in the tubs and stick in the fridge. All you need to do now if you want food is take a few bits out stick them in a microwaveable tub and nuke em. Any larger pieces of meat ie beef, pork, lamb get some advice off friends mums how long to cook it for then cook it, slice it and stick in tuppaware.

hope it helps...

Oh and pizzas... get some mates over, some dvds and get em down ya!
