Freezing When Access HDD

When I try and access my new SATA Drive for anything, copying to, installing on, or anything, my comp completely freezes, mouse doesn't move, no activity lights, the screen just freezes on exactly what it was doing and doesn't move.

Is this going to be the HDD busted? or the PSU not powerful enough?

I am running

ASUS MV-MX SE, X2 4200+, 2GB Crucial DDR2 (533), x1950pro 512MB, 1 80GB IDE HDD, 1 DVD RW
plus the 500GB W.D SATA Drive

All on a Hyper 550W PSU

Cheers.

Hypers can be a bit iffy but 550w is plently for that system.

Have you used a hard drive tool to check its smart status? That might give some indication as to what's going on. I know speedfan will do it.

Does the machine respond eventually? Does this happen every time you try and access the new drive or just after it's been left for a while?

I will try that program when I get home, thx.

No the machine doesn't respond again and it happens as soon as I do anything with the drive, doesn't matter how long it's been on.

OK Used SpeedFan and SiSSoftware Sandra to check the SMART and it is all fine, the voltages seem fine also.
Without the SATA Drive my PC runs fine, If I install Windows on it, and run it alone, it still freezes.

Any other ideas? short of RMA'ing it (and possibly having the fine from OcUK if it is ok)

Haud on, haud on...

This is a brand new drive in an old machine - chances are it needs the drive set to run at SATA150 rather than the default SATA300. If it's WD you'll need to stick a jumper across a couple of pins on the back of the drive, I forget which ones but if it's not marked on the drive label then it's certainly on the WD site.
